Racing Incident Report

BRAINIEST began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. WYNDAM PLENTY began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped MAMOUSKA. ZHI YOU SPIRIT began awkwardly, shifted out and was then bumped by CHAMP DRAGON. RISING WIN was slow to begin and then knuckled. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, PERSEVERANCE was steadied and shifted back to a position behind BRING US LUCK with cover, then despite being ridden along was unable to maintain its position and as a consequence got well back and in the Straight gave ground. PERSEVERANCE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of PERSEVERANCE after the race did not show any significant findings. After entering the Back Straight, RISING WIN was steadied away from the heels of BRAINIEST. After the 700 Metres, BRING US LUCK commenced to give ground, near the 600 Metres blundered and then afterwards tailed out. BRING US LUCK was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, BRING US LUCK was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was making an abnormal breathing noise and an endoscopic examination showed it to be a "roarer". The performance of BRING US LUCK was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, BRING US LUCK will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. For a considerable distance after straightening, CHAMP DRAGON raced tight outside ATHLETIC GOLD which was endeavouring to shift to the outside of WYNDAM PLENTY into clear running. At the 200 Metres, ZHI YOU SPIRIT was bumped by RISING WIN which when endeavouring to improve towards the outside of BRAINIEST was carried wider by that horse which momentarily shifted ground. No action was taken. Shortly after this, RISING WIN was steadied and shifted in when disappointed for running outside BRAINIEST which continued to shift out. Throughout the race, GREAT STAR raced wide and without cover and in the Straight gave ground. Y T Cheng (KNIGHT TEMPLAR) said the intention had been to ride the horse, which was tonight racing with a visor removed and side winkers added, in about midfield. He said because of the instructions he did not ride KNIGHT TEMPLAR along out of the gates in the hope of being able to drop across behind runners. He said BRING US LUCK which had drawn to his inside was ridden along to go forward and he immediately shifted across behind runners, then he himself commenced to ride along, however, KNIGHT TEMPLAR failed to muster speed and as a consequence got well back. He said he gradually made up ground to be with the field near the 700 Metres where he remained racing on the inside. He said in the Straight KNIGHT TEMPLAR commenced to close the race off strongly when being ridden out and after the 200 Metres he improved towards a tight run which had become available inside WYNDAM PLENTY. He said as he approached that run WYNDAM PLENTY drifted in slightly and consequently there was not sufficient room for him to continue improving, resulting in him checking his mount near the 50 Metres. When questioned, C Williams (RISING WIN), dead heat 3rd placegetter, accepted he had stopped riding his mount out one stride prior to the winning post. He said he did this because at this stage of the race ATHLETIC GOLD, the winner of the race, was being eased down by its rider and he commenced to make ground close to the heels of that horse. He said therefore he stopped riding and endeavoured to shift his mount out to ensure he would not be placed on the heels of ATHLETIC GOLD. In the circumstances, the Stewards accepted C Williams' explanation, however, he was reminded wherever circumstances permit he must ensure he rides his mounts out right to the end of the race. MAMOUSKA, ATHLETIC GOLD and WYNDAM PLENTY were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported BRAINIEST had bled from both nostrils.
