Racing Incident Report

OLIVE OR TWIST, FLORAL DANCER and FABULOUS were slow to begin. Near the 1700 Metres, FABULOUS, which had been hard ridden to make up lost ground, was checked when disappointed for running between MODERN PROSPECT and OLIVE OR TWIST which shifted in. No action was taken. Approaching the first turn, TUSITALA raced awkwardly and was steadied away from the heels of CUPID. Making the first turn, SHOW BRAVELY became unbalanced when crowded for room inside HAPPY CONTENDER which shifted in away from FABULOUS while hanging. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, STEP FORWARD hung in. Near the 200 Metres, MODERN PROSPECT, which was giving ground, was steadied to avoid the heels of HAPPY CONTENDER (K S Yu) which at this time was shifted out acutely whilst being ridden along to obtain clear running. K S Yu was severely reprimanded and advised to exercise greater care. Over the concluding stages, CUPID hung in and proved difficult to ride. For the major part of the race, HAPPY CONTENDER hung in and proved difficult to ride. When questioned, E Saint-Martin (OUT OF MY WAY) said he had been instructed from a wide barrier to take the horse back from the start towards a rearward position and in the Straight ensure he made his running on the outside of the field. Mr S Woods, trainer of OUT OF MY WAY, said the horse does not possess the necessary speed to obtain a forward position in a race such as this without having undue pressure applied to it. He said he therefore instructed E Saint-Martin to ride the horse with cover. He said OUT OF MY WAY does not appreciate having pressure applied to it in the early stages to obtain a forward position and as such in the horse's future starts it will not be ridden along unnecessarily in the early stages but rather allowed to travel where it is comfortable. He said in a slowly run race this may be further forward than in a race such as today, however, he advised the Stewards he will be instructing the riders of OUT OF MY WAY in future not to apply unnecessary pressure to the horse in the early stages. OUT OF MY WAY was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of OUT OF MY WAY after the race did not show any significant findings. B Prebble (TOP PRIZE), which was having its first start on the All Weather surface today said the horse in his opinion resented the kickback in the early stages and was reluctant to stride out. He said he rode TOP PRIZE along, however, the horse failed to respond and was most disappointing. TOP PRIZE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, TOP PRIZE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse had sustained a cut to the left hind fetlock. WADADELIGHT and CUPID were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 23 May 2005)
TOP PRIZE, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time the horse had sustained a cut to the left hind fetlock. TOP PRIZE was again examined by the Veterinary Surgeon at the stables of Trainer A Lee yesterday morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the left hind leg. Before being permitted to race again, TOP PRIZE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
