Racing Incident Report

KING HESPERUS was withdrawn on 8.11.05 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (left fore bruised knee) and was replaced by first Standby Declared Starter MAGIC TOUCH (R Fradd). THOUSAND WINS was also withdrawn on 8.11.05 on veterinary advice (lame left fore) and was replaced by second Standby Declared Starter VICTORY TREASURE (D Whyte). Before being allowed to race again, KING HESPERUS and THOUSAND WINS will both be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MEATH was slow to begin and shortly afterwards was steadied when crowded for room between GREEN IN BLUE and GREAT LEADER, both of which shifted ground. FAT CHANCE was slow to begin. Making the first turn, VICTORY TURBO was steadied when crowded for room inside GREAT LEADER which was racing tight inside SOCRATES which was carried in slightly by VICTORY TREASURE which shifted in when not quite clear. D Whyte was told to exercise greater care. Near the 1600 Metres, GREAT LEADER became unbalanced in its action. In the Straight, SHANGHAI KING hung out. Making the turns, ELEPHANT DANCE hung out and throughout the race travelled wide and without cover. When questioned regarding the improved performance of the winner SOCRATES which was beaten many lengths at its last start when racing first up from a spell, Mr C Fownes, trainer of the horse, said tonight's performance followed an impressive barrier trial win when hard ridden by O Doleuze after its last start failure. He said SOCRATES previously had performed best when ridden by strong riders, in particular O Doleuze and because of this he engaged that rider for tonight. He said when SOCRATES raced first up, it carried 113 lbs and as such O Doleuze was not able to make the weight. Mr Fownes said he had endeavoured to engage other jockeys to ride the horse, however, because of the horse's weight the available choices were limited and as such he engaged K S Yu. He said the instructions issued to K S Yu were consistent with those issued for all of SOCRATES' runs: to begin well, ride along and endeavour to travel in a forward position. He said he was satisfied with the riding of K S Yu who endeavoured to carry out the instructions, however, SOCRATES refused to stretch out, soon became detached and at no stage throughout the race travelled. He said previously SOCRATES had shown itself to be somewhat inconsistent and on one occasion last season when working on the Riverside with a partner also refused to stretch out. He said tonight O Doleuze was able to have SOCRATES travel in a forward position despite being three wide and ride the horse vigorously in an endeavour to ensure it performed competitively. Mr Fownes said the form reversal of SOCRATES in his opinion was entirely due to the character of the horse and he had not varied its work between runs. Mr Fownes was told the inconsistent form displayed by SOCRATES was of concern to the Stewards and although the horse at times may not race genuinely he is at all times to ensure he does his utmost to have his runners perform consistently. Further Mr Fownes was told should SOCRATES continue to perform inconsistently action may be taken. GREAT LEADER and FAT CHANCE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of GREAT LEADER and FAT CHANCE after the race did not show any significant findings. SOCRATES and ROYAL FALCON were sent for sampling. After the race, an endoscopic examination was carried out on SHANGHAI KING at the request of Trainer A S Cruz. The Veterinary Officer said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood and mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, SHANGHAI KING will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
