Racing Incident Report

At the time of declarations, Apprentice K W Tsui was mistakenly declared as the rider of HAPI HAPI. Apprentice Tsui is currently on extended sick leave. The Stewards permitted Apprentice K L Chui to be substituted as the rider of HAPI HAPI. For this error at declarations, Mr P F Yiu, trainer of HAPI HAPI, was fined $2,000. TAKLEY was withdrawn on 30.6.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (high muscle enzyme) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter ONE STEP AHEAD. Before being allowed to race again, TAKLEY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SUNNY RIVIERA was slow to begin. On jumping, HAPI HAPI got its head up. Shortly after the start, when being steadied to shift across behind runners from the outside gate, HARMONY got its head up. After the 1100 Metres, NEW MILESTONE, GRAND FIGHTER and SUPER MUSIC were steadied when crowded for room inside KING ENCOSTA (F Coetzee) which shifted in after getting its head on the side and commencing to hang. Whilst the Stewards acknowledged F Coetzee had made some effort to prevent his mount shifting ground, he was nonetheless severely reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort than he did on this occasion. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, FLYING TAMARI got its head on the side and hung out. After the 800 Metres, NICE KING got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of NEW MILESTONE. At the 300 Metres, SPACE SHUTTLE was steadied and shifted in to avoid the heels of HAPI HAPI which at this time was giving ground. In the Straight, THUNDER DANCING hung out. Also in the Straight, ONE STEP AHEAD hung in and proved difficult to ride. When questioned, Y T Cheng (GRAND CRU), which was having its first Hong Kong race start, said his mount did not show early speed and got well back. He said passing the 1000 Metres he steadied his mount and shifted across to race towards the rail, however, his mount did not pick up and travelled some distance behind NICE KING, the horse which it was following. He said because of the manner in which GRAND CRU was racing, he believed it was in the horse's best interest to have it properly balanced in the early stages and gradually make up ground coming into the Home Straight. He said in the Home Straight he rode GRAND CRU out vigorously hands and heels, however, he was restricted in being able to use the whip on the horse due to it hanging out. Y T Cheng was told his riding on this occasion had come under notice and he must at all times ensure that he properly tests his mounts where circumstances permit. HAPI HAPI was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, HAPI HAPI was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was displaying an irregular heart beat. Before being allowed to race again, HAPI HAPI will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. KING ENCOSTA, SWIFT GERMANIA and THUNDER DANCING were sent for sampling. Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported HARMONY was making an abnormal breathing noise and an endoscopic examination of the horse was carried out at the request of Mr D E Ferraris, trainer of the horse. He said this examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, HARMONY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
