Racing Incident Report
The Stewards considered an application from Trainer C S Shum that he be permitted to withdraw WINNING SUCCESS as E Saint-Martin, the horse's declared rider, was indisposed and he did not believe the available riders were in the circumstances suitable. He said all the available riders would be required to carry a significant amount of lead to make the weight on WINNING SUCCESS and he believed this was not in the interest of the horse. The Stewards did not accede to the application from Mr Shum and directed that he should engage a replacement rider. M Odendaal was subsequently substituted as the rider of WINNING SUCCESS. SANBENITO was slow to begin. ROMANTIC GREEN began awkwardly and lost ground. F Coetzee (CALCANDO) said when the horse led at its most recent start it was beaten a short margin by a horse finishing from behind. He said today he had been instructed to ride CALCANDO with cover to ensure that the horse was given an opportunity to finish the race off. He said despite obtaining cover CALCANDO was today disappointing and did not finish the race off. D Whyte (RELY ON ME) said he endeavoured to stay racing away from the rail, however, at the 800 Metres was carried in by CHATER DE LAGO. He said RELY ON ME again did not appear comfortable racing behind and inside horses, in the Straight did not stride out as he thought it should and was most disappointing. RELY ON ME and SUPER MUSIC were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of RELY ON ME after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported SUPER MUSIC was making an abnormal breathing noise. He said an endoscopic examination showed the horse to be a "roarer". CALCANDO, CHAMPION KING and EXPEDITIOUS were sent for sampling.
