Racing Incident Report

TIRAMISU was withdrawn on 18.11.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame right fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter NOBLE RAIDER (E Saint-Martin). Before being allowed to race again, TIRAMISU will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CLASSIC HORSE began awkwardly and lost ground at the start. KING OF SPADES was slow to begin. AMAZING WIN, which was leaning against the barrier partition, began awkwardly and shortly after the start was bumped by SPACED which shifted out. Near the 1200 Metres, HANDBAG PREMIER was steadied away from the heels of CONGRATULATION which got its head on the side and shifted in away from SPACED. Apprentice C W Wong (SPACED) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that passing the 1100 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of CONGRATULATION, resulting in that horse being taken in across the running of LUCKY DRAGON which was checked. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards believed it was appropriate for Apprentice Wong's licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Thursday 7 December 2006 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin racemeeting next Sunday 26 November 2006. For some distance after this incident, LUCKY DRAGON got its head up when being checked off the heels of CONGRATULATION. Approaching and passing the 1000 Metres, HANDBAG PREMIER got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of AMAZING WIN which shifted in when barely clear. Also passing the 1000 Metres, CLASSIC HORSE got its head up and shifted out when being checked off the heels of THUNDER STORM. CLASSIC HORSE was then awkwardly placed close to the heels of THUNDER STORM for some distance. AMAZING WIN hung out in the middle stages and near the 500 Metres was steadied off the heels of NOBLE RAIDER. KING OF SPADES had difficulty obtaining clear running in the early part of the Straight. LUCKY DRAGON was held up in the Straight until passing the 300 Metres at which point LUCKY DRAGON shifted to the outside of CONGRATULATION to go forward. HAPPY MASTER was badly held up when unable to obtain clear running in the Straight until the 100 Metres. Approaching the 200 Metres, CLASSIC HORSE was steadied when crowded for room between NOBLE RAIDER which shifted out slightly and AMAZING WIN (M Nunes) which shifted in under pressure. M Nunes was advised to exercise more care. Near the 100 Metres, CONGRATULATION hung in, resulting in WAFER KING being crowded for room between that horse and SPACED. NOBLE RAIDER travelled wide and without cover throughout the race. When questioned, D Nikolic (SPRING SMILES) said his mount, which was fractious in the barriers, was slow to begin. He said he then allowed the horse which was having its first start in Hong Kong to get balanced and travelled where it was comfortable behind the eventual winner, I'M NO SQUARE. He said in the middle stages SPRING SMILES raced greenly and despite his riding along passing the 600 Metres was reluctant to hold its position. He added in the Straight SPRING SMILES commenced to respond to his riding and once brought to the outside finished the race off strongly. When questioned regarding the improved performance of I'M NO SQUARE, Trainer C Fownes said the horse had been disappointing since arriving in Hong Kong. He said at its only start this preparation the horse was not suited on the All Weather surface. He said since that run the horse had had two official barrier trials and at its most recent trial he had added a visor to the gear of I'M NO SQUARE for the trial only in an endeavour to sharpen the horse up. HANDBAG PREMIER was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, HANDBAG PREMIER was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse made an abnormal breathing noise and was confirmed be a "roarer". CONGRATULATION, I'M NO SQUARE and KING OF SPADES were sent for sampling.
