Racing Incident Report

At declaration time, W M Lai was declared as the rider of both DRAGON STRIDE and WINNING PATTERN. It was established that W M Lai had a firm commitment to ride WINNING PATTERN. As such, the Stewards permitted M Odendaal to be substituted as the rider of DRAGON STRIDE. For this declaration error, W M Lai was fined $2,000. After arriving at the Start, NOBLE ZOOM, which had kicked a rail when leaving the Parade Ring, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. PROFIT HILL was slow to begin. On straightening, NOBLE ZOOM was bumped by ACTIVE VALOUR which got its head on the side and shifted out. After this, ACTIVE VALOUR continued to hang out. Shortly after straightening, PROFIT HILL was steadied away from the heels of WIKI WIKI. After the 200 Metres, SMARTY FACE was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of SPEED FIGHTER (D Nikolic) which shifted in when not quite clear. D Nikolic was advised to exercise care. G Mossé (THAT'S IT) said the horse travelled comfortably in the early stages, however, was wide and without cover. He said at its most recent start, THAT'S IT also travelled wide and without cover from a wide barrier and was able to perform well. He said today at the 700 Metres he became concerned with the manner in which THAT'S IT was travelling as the horse did not feel strong underneath him and then was most disappointing thereafter. He said THAT'S IT previously had raced over longer distances than 1200 Metres, however, had been freshened up and today was its third start over 1200 Metres. He said it might be that THAT'S IT now requires races of further distances than that of today. Apprentice K L Chui (WIKI WIKI) explained he intended to ride the horse in 3rd or 4th position. He said WIKI WIKI did not show early speed and got much further back than intended despite his efforts to have the horse in a forward position. He said WIKI WIKI failed to respond to his riding in the Straight and was most disappointing. WIKI WIKI was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of WIKI WIKI after the race did not show any significant findings. SMARTY FACE, SPEED FIGHTER and HONEST TREASURE were sent for sampling.
