Racing Incident Report

On jumping CHINOOK got its head up and was then hard ridden to maintain its position between DARE TO WIN and VINTAGE GOLD. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, VINTAGE GOLD was steadied away from the heels of CHINA HERO. Near the 1300 Metres, SNIPER shifted in, bumped the running rail and became unbalanced. After entering the Back Straight, WATCHMAN was left racing without cover. Near the 250 Metres, KEY WINNER was steadied away from the heels of VINTAGE GOLD which shifted to the outside of WATCHMAN to obtain clear running. A Delpech (CHINA HERO), which was having its first start at Happy Valley tonight, explained at no stage of the race was the horse comfortable racing around the tighter track. He said making the first turn CHINA HERO changed to be on the wrong leg and was unbalanced in its action. He said CHINA HERO travelled only fairly along the Back Straight and near the 500 Metres came under pressure, however, failed to respond to his riding. He said the manner in which CHINA HERO raced tonight indicated at this stage of its career it is better suited racing at Sha Tin. S Dye (CHAMPION PIONEER) said he took the horse back to a rearward position in the early stages as in the past when having pressure applied to it CHAMPION PIONEER has raced ungenerously and hung out. He said CHAMPION PIONEER travelled comfortably at the tail of the field until near the 800 Metres where it coughed on two occasions. He said because of this he looked down at the left hand side of the horse to ensure it had not bled. He said after this CHAMPION PIONEER again travelled comfortably, in the early part of the Straight when being ridden along responded fairly, however, commenced to hang out and shift wider. He said because of this after the 200 Metres he had to stop riding and shift his mount back to the inside of SILLY BOY which at this time was giving ground. He said after this CHAMPION PIONEER finished the race off nicely. The explanation submitted by S Dye was accepted. CHINA HERO was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. CHAMPION PIONEER was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of CHINA HERO and CHAMPION PIONEER after the race did not show any significant findings. DARE TO WIN and CHINOOK were sent for sampling.
