Racing Incident Report

After arriving at the Start, RICE FIELD, which had kicked a rail when proceeding to the Start, was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said in his opinion it was suitable to race. ALPHA MAIL was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, LEADING AHEAD was checked when crowded for room between ORIENTAL MAGIC and SUPER PEGASUS which on jumping shifted out. Also shortly after the start, GOLDEN SUN was crowded for room between ORIENTAL MAGIC and PACKING ANGEL which shifted in. Near the 1500 Metres, SHABU SHABU was steadied away from the heels of PACKING ANGEL which shifted out. In the early stages, FULL OF JOY, which had been intended to be ridden quietly from the outside barrier, was unable to obtain cover and as a consequence proved difficult to settle and pulled its way forward. However, FULL OF JOY then raced wide and without cover for the remainder of the race. D Nikolic (RICE FIELD) explained he was instructed to ensure he rode the horse with cover if possible which he anticipated would be in about midfield. He said at its last start RICE FIELD over-raced badly when not able to obtain cover and travelled outside the leader. He said in accordance with the instructions, on jumping he immediately steadied RICE FIELD to ensure it obtained cover, however, it soon became apparent to him that he would be obliged to race wide on the track, therefore after the 1400 Metres he took RICE FIELD back further to shift across behind runners but near the rear. He said RICE FIELD travelled comfortably, in the early part of the Straight he commenced to improve his position, after the 300 Metres followed LEADING AHEAD through when that horse was making its run. He said at the 50 Metres he was momentarily awkwardly placed between PACKING ANGEL which was giving ground and CITY OF TROY which shifted out slightly. He said because of this he steadied his mount. Mr J Moore, trainer of RICE FIELD, said the horse was most disappointing last start when unable to obtain cover in the early stages. He said because of this he asked D Nikolic to ensure he did not allow RICE FIELD to run along in the early stages. He said in the circumstances he was satisfied with the riding of D Nikolic. D Nikolic was told his explanation would be reported. Mr Moore was told in similar circumstances it would be in his best interest to advise the Stewards of his intention to vary the manner in which horses trained by him are to race. GOLDEN SUN was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of GOLDEN SUN after the race did not show any significant findings. ALPHA MAIL, LEADING AHEAD and ORIENTAL MAGIC were sent for sampling.
