Racing Incident Report

Shortly after the start, SYDNEY OWNER was checked when crowded for room between QUEST FOR LOVE and NICE KING, both of which shifted ground. In the early stages, NICE KING proved difficult to settle. Near the 800 Metres, NORTHERN HERO was left racing wide and without cover. Making the Home Turn, THUNDER DANCING hung out. At the 350 Metres, QUEST FOR LOVE was crowded for room inside SUPER FIGHTER which shifted in when giving ground. Also at the 350 Metres, NICE KING, which was having difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of SUPER FIGHTER. At the same time, SUPER SNIPPETS, which was having some difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied away from the heels of OPERA MAGIC. After the 200 Metres, SYDNEY OWNER was steadied when having difficulty obtaining clear running to the inside of WELL NOTED which was giving ground. W M Lai (SUPER FIGHTER) explained from an awkward barrier because the horse was stepping up in distance today, he had been instructed to ride it in front of midfield. He said SUPER FIGHTER showed good early speed and travelled into a forward position, however, was obliged to race wide and without cover. He said as a consequence SUPER FIGHTER failed to finish the race off. D Beadman (HORACE'S CHOICE) explained from a wide barrier he was told to ride the horse where it was comfortable. He said when ridden outside the lead previously HORACE'S CHOICE had failed to finish its race off, however, last start when ridden with cover the horse was unlucky when not able to obtain clear running. He said HORACE'S CHOICE began well, he immediately noticed runners on the inside pushing forward, so he elected to come back to obtain a position with cover to avoid being caught wide. He said for him to obtain a favourable position he had to come back behind NORTHERN HERO which was further back than he had initially intended. When questioned, Apprentice K T Yeung (BOLD WIN) said he had been instructed from the outside barrier to go back on the horse in the early stages. He said accordingly after BOLD WIN began well, he restrained his mount and crossed to the fence behind runners. He said after the 700 Metres he shifted away from the rail and at this time was positioned inside the heels of NICE KING with HORACE'S CHOICE racing further out. He said he elected to remain racing towards the inside rounding the Home Turn in an attempt to follow SUPER SNIPPETS which he believed to be a strong chance in the race. He said as a consequence of remaining towards the inside, he had difficulty obtaining clear running for the majority of the Home Straight and as a consequence BOLD WIN was not properly tested. Mr D J Hall, trainer of BOLD WIN, said he had instructed Apprentice Yeung to ride the horse in a rearward position from its outside barrier. He said when the horse had drawn more favourably in recent starts when being ridden by a senior jockey, the horse had raced in midfield or a little better. He said he felt to have BOLD WIN being ridden forward from the start today would result in the horse travelling wide. He did say he felt BOLD WIN would be able to close the race off strongly as he anticipated the tempo would be solid. Mr Hall said he engaged the services of a claiming apprentice to offset the rise in weights given to the horse following its last start win. He did say he would have preferred to see Apprentice Yeung endeavour to position himself to take runs wider on the track rather than staying on the inside rounding the Home Turn. Apprentice Yeung was told his riding of BOLD WIN had caused Stewards' concern and in their opinion was not one of his better ones. Mr Hall was told he should exercise care in issuing riding instructions to apprentice jockeys to ensure they clearly understand his intentions. NORTHERN HERO was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of NORTHERN HERO after the race did not show any significant findings. HORACE'S CHOICE, OPERATION SECRET and OPERA MAGIC were sent for sampling.
