Racing Incident Report

SPECIAL KING PRAWN began awkwardly and lost a considerable amount of ground. Making the Home Turn, FOKINE was held up behind PLANET RULER. Prior to straightening, LIBERAL'S KNIGHT was steadied when disappointed for running between COUNTRY MUSIC and MAVERICK STAR. When questioned regarding his riding of BILLET EXPRESS, Apprentice K T Yeung, in the presence of his allocated trainer, Mr A T Millard, said he had been instructed to ride the horse in a forward position, to lead would be acceptable, however, if NATURAL BLITZ was hard ridden to lead, he should follow that horse. He said in accordance with those instructions he ensured BILLET EXPRESS began well from a favourable barrier and rode along in the early stages including using the whip on the horse to ensure it was ridden in a forward position. He said in the early stages YELLOW DIAMOND and NATURAL BLITZ which were drawn wider on the track were ridden along and crossed to race on his outside. He said near the 1000 Metres YELLOW DIAMOND was steadied and NATURAL BLITZ then crossed to race on his outside. He said he continued to ride BILLET EXPRESS to go forward and NATURAL BLITZ then steadied approaching the turn at the 800 Metres. He said making the turn at the 800 Metres BILLET EXPRESS commenced to hang out. He said because of the manner in which BILLET EXPRESS was racing, he had pressure on the right rein to prevent the horse from shifting away from the rail and it proved difficult for him to steady. He said he realized the tempo of the race was too quick and because of this near the 600 Metres he looked over his right shoulder to see how far in front of the field he was. He said BILLET EXPRESS continued to lay out making the Home Turn and in the Straight gave ground quickly. Mr J Moore, trainer of BILLET EXPRESS, confirmed the intention was to have the horse ridden in a forward position. He said at its most recent success which was some time ago BILLET EXPRESS travelled worse than midfield on a wet track and was able to close the race off strongly. He said since that occasion BILLET EXPRESS had been ridden in a similar manner, however, its recent form had been disappointing and therefore it was felt appropriate to revert riding the horse in a forward position as it has been early in its career. Mr Moore said in his opinion Apprentice Yeung had erred by allowing BILLET EXPRESS to set too fast a tempo in the early and middle stages, however, he did say BILLET EXPRESS is not an easy horse to ride and he had engaged a claiming apprentice today in the hope that the weight relief would assist the horse improving its performance. Mr Moore did say following today's race it is his intention to consult the owners of BILLET EXPRESS as to whether the horse should be retired. Before concluding this matter, the Stewards wish to give it further consideration. S Dye (GREEN BIRDIE) said on today's track surface the horse did not travel as well as it has previously. He said he was required to ride GREEN BIRDIE along today in an endeavour to make up ground rounding the Home Turn where usually the horse travels strongly at this stage of the race. He said in the Straight while GREEN BIRDIE did make up some ground, it was disappointing in the manner in which it closed the race off compared to its previous starts when being ridden in a similar manner. He said while GREEN BIRDIE has raced well on "Good to Firm" tracks, in his opinion those tracks were more forgiving than today's surface. GREEN BIRDIE was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. A veterinary inspection of GREEN BIRDIE after the race did not show any significant findings. YELLOW DIAMOND and MAVERICK STAR were sent for sampling.
