Racing Incident Report

PACIFIC ALLIANCE was slow to begin. POWER AND GOLD shifted out abruptly at the start, resulting in TURF WINNER, PERFECT TEN and THE WITCH’S BROOM all being crowded for room between that horse and NEW IDEA. In this incident, NEW IDEA was also bumped by THE WITCH’S BROOM and became unbalanced. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, THE WITCH’S BROOM was steadied when briefly crowded for room inside NEW IDEA which shifted in slightly. In the early stages, FANTASTISCH got its head up and proved difficult to settle. Passing the 500 Metres, ABSOLUTE HEDGE and THE UNTOUCHABLELAD bumped as ABSOLUTE HEDGE shifted out from behind FANTASTISCH into clear running. For some distance approaching and passing the 400 Metres, POWER AND GOLD was checked away from the heels of TURF WINNER and taken back through the field by that horse which commenced to give ground rapidly. Near the 150 Metres, FANTASTISCH was checked when disappointed for running between NEW IDEA and PERFECT TEN. After this, FANTASTISCH was shifted out in an endeavour to obtain clear running, however, near the 50 Metres was checked when again disappointed for running between THE WITCH’S BROOM and PERFECT TEN (G Mossé) which shifted out under pressure. G Mossé was reprimanded and advised to ensure that he makes every effort to keep his mounts on a straight course in similar circumstances. J Victoire (PACIFIC ALLIANCE) was reminded of his obligation to ride his mounts out to the end of the race at least hands and heels where circumstances permit. When questioned, B Doyle (NEW IDEA) said he had been instructed to lead on the horse including using the whip on it in the early stages if necessary to ensure that it was able to lead. He said he had to make considerable use of NEW IDEA in the early stages to cross runners to his inside and after obtaining the lead near the 1200 Metres attempted to steady NEW IDEA. He said NEW IDEA has an unusual bounding action and although he attempted to steady the horse, he was reluctant to overly restrain it due to its action. He said he continued to steady NEW IDEA as much as possible in the middle stages and as he believed NEW IDEA is one-paced, he commenced to quicken the tempo from the 600 Metres. Trainer C S Shum confirmed that he had given explicit instructions to B Doyle to lead on the horse as from barrier 11, it was felt that if he was not able to lead, the horse would possibly be obliged to race wide and without cover throughout the race. He said for this reason he asked B Doyle to ensure that he led on the horse to offset the wide barrier. Following the race, J Lloyd, the rider of TURF WINNER, which finished tailed out, reported that the horse was making an abnormal respiratory noise. A veterinary inspection of TURF WINNER after the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being permitted to race again, TURF WINNER will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ABSOLUTE HEDGE and THE UNTOUCHABLELAD were sent for sampling.
