Racing Incident Report

DANZIG CONTINENTAL was withdrawn on 23.4.02 on veterinary grounds (lame near fore limb) and replaced by Standby Declared Starter HORACE'S HORSE (W Woods). Before being allowed to race again, DANZIG CONTINENTAL will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. When the gates opened, PRINCESS BEAUTY bounded in the air, landed awkwardly and as a consequence lost a lot of ground. On leaving the gates, GRANVILLE ISLAND shifted out abruptly, as a consequence of this inconvenience was caused to HORACE'S HORSE. Near the 600 Metres, HEAVENLY WIND, GRANVILLE ISLAND and APRIL HARE bumped. GRANVILLE ISLAND and THE GRAND ROOF were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing. When questioned, H K Yim (THE GRAND ROOF) said he has been riding the horse in its races of recent times, has been travelling towards the front, tonight from an outside gate he was instructed to ride THE GRAND ROOF more quietly, but to find cover if possible. He said on jumping he immediately took hold of THE GRAND ROOF, came back on the horse and endeavoured to find a position behind PERFECT SPORT, was unable to do so, was obliged to race wide throughout and then over about the last 400 Metres did try and make ground on THE GRAND ROOF. He said the horse closed the race off in his opinion only fairly. Mr T W Leung, trainer of THE GRAND ROOF, confirmed the instructions given, but also said the horse can be difficult on the track, has a bad mouth and he expressed general satisfaction with the riding of THE GRAND ROOF. H K Yim was told the evidence he had submitted this evening was being recorded and that his ride at certain stages had come under notice. He was told it is his responsibility to endeavour to ride all mounts in such a manner so as to leave no room whatsoever for query. Mr T W Leung was advised whilst it is an acceptable practice to change riding tactics, he does have an obligation by way of instruction to ensure horses which he trains are ridden in such a fashion so as to give them every possible opportunity of winning or placing. The evidence he submitted on this occasion was also recorded. After the race, it was reported that HORACE'S HORSE was bleeding from both nostrils.
