Racing Incident Report

On jumping, INSIGHTOREALITY was severely checked between WINMARK and BUENO BUENO which after being restless in the starting stalls came out awkwardly, then shifted out abruptly. ADMIRAL left the gates awkwardly and threw its head about. On jumping, CHIVAS LAD was checked when crowded between DEEP PURPLE which shifted out slightly and SKY HAWK which momentarily shifted in. Turning out of the Straight the first time, CHIVAS LAD was steadied when momentarily crowded by INSIGHTOREALITY. In the early and middle stages, WINMARK, which was obliged to race wide, pulled hard and proved very difficult to settle. Near the 600 Metres, CHIVAS LAD brushed the running rail and about the 400 Metres was steadied when disappointed for running inside WINMARK. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred in the Straight which cast sufficient doubt on whether DEEP PURPLE should be declared the winner of the race. They decided that there was justification to have the matter resolved openly and formally at a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). A Marcus, the rider of SKY HAWK, second placegetter, also objected against DEEP PURPLE (F Coetzee) being declared the winner alleging interference in the Straight. Following the conduct of a formal hearing, the Stewards on all the available evidence were of the opinion that by continually shifting out under pressure and carrying SKY HAWK from running to which it was rightfully entitled, DEEP PURPLE had caused interference to SKY HAWK. The Stewards formed the opinion that SKY HAWK would have finished ahead of DEEP PURPLE had the interference which clearly took place not occurred. In arriving at this decision, the Stewards were conscious of the nose margin between the two runners at the end of the race. In sustaining the objection, the Stewards placed DEEP PURPLE immediately behind SKY HAWK [Rule 101(2)]. Accordingly the amended placings became SKY HAWK 1st; DEEP PURPLE 2nd; BRAVISSIMO 3rd and MILLENNIUM LEGEND 4th. F Coetzee pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that over about the last 300 Metres he allowed his mount to shift out whilst riding it along when not clear of SKY HAWK. As a consequence of this, SKY HAWK was hampered and carried from running to which it was rightfully entitled. F Coetzee was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday 26 May 2002 on which day he may resume race riding (4 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Sha Tin next Saturday 11 May 2002. BRAVISSIMO was sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing.
