Racing Incident Report

GREAT SENSATION was slow to begin, then shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of TREASURE FIELD. When the gates opened, BAYVIEW LAD bounded in the air. On straightening, ACE ACADEMY and BAYVIEW LAD were carried wider by WORLD STAR which shifted to the outside of WINNING FIESTA to obtain clear running. Immediately following the race and prior to the weighed-in signal being semaphored, Apprentice M W Leung, rider of CHERISHED, and Mr D Hill, trainer of the horse, requested permission to view the official video of the start of the race as they were of the opinion CHERISHED had had an unfair start. After receiving that request, the Stewards immediately deferred the declaration of weighed-in so that consideration could be given as to whether CHERISHED had had an unfair start [Rule 12(19)]. Having viewed all the available films and considered the evidence submitted by Apprentice M W Leung together with Mr D Hill and Mr C Chow, Deputy Starter, who effected the start of this race, it was established that when the gates opened, CHERISHED still had the blindfold covering its eyes. The Stewards considered that in these circumstances CHERISHED was denied an opportunity to jump with the field and therefore had had an unfair start. Accordingly CHERISHED was deemed to be a non-runner. C Soumillon (WINNING FIESTA) said he had been instructed to ride the horse where it was comfortable, however, it was hoped that the horse would not be as far back as it was in its most recent start. He said WINNING FIESTA began nicely, he immediately allowed the horse to maintain its forward position and endeavoured to find cover, however, was unable to do so and therefore was obliged to race three wide and without cover. He said making the turns, WINNING FIESTA hung out and throughout the race appeared to be shy of runners to its inside. He said he became concerned as far out as the 800 Metres that WINNING FIESTA would not figure in the finish of the race. He said in the Straight when under pressure, WINNING FIESTA gave ground. C Soumillon was unable to offer any explanation for the poor performance of the horse. He said he had been riding the horse in its track work leading up to tonight's race and in his opinion this work had been satisfactory despite the horse showing a tendency to hang out even in its morning work. WINNING FIESTA was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, WINNING FIESTA was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse returned coughing. An endoscopic examination was carried out and this showed a trace of blood in the trachea, the significance of which in his opinion was questionable. Following the race, D Whyte (GREAT SENSATION) reported that the horse was not stretching out freely and because of this he did not ride his mount out as he normally would. GREAT SENSATION was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A subsequent veterinary examination of GREAT SENSATION did not show any significant findings. Before GREAT SENSATION can race again, it will be required to pass an official veterinary examination. CONVERGENCE and TREASURE FIELD were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 13 Feb. 2003) :
After the race, a veterinary examination of GREAT SENSATION did not reveal any significant findings. D Whyte, its rider, had reported the horse was not striding out freely during the race. GREAT SENSATION was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer P Chapple-Hyam this morning and it was noted there was significant pain in the heels of both front feet. As previously reported, GREAT SENSATION will be required to pass an official veterinary examination before racing again.
