Racing Incident Report

G Mossé was fined $2,000 for accepting rides on both HAPPY YEARS and FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. It was established that he had a firm commitment for HAPPY YEARS. Permission was granted for D Dunn to be substituted as the rider of FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. After arriving at the Start, it was noted blood was present in the mouth of BUDDIES POWER. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. FORM FIT and CHAMPION BOY were slow to begin. MULTI-WIN, which was standing with its head turned to the left, began awkwardly, shifted in and was awkwardly placed close to the heels of FORTUNE LAD which shifted out. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY was slow into stride, shortly after the start was steadied when crowded for room between MULTI-WIN and O' SHINY. From a wide barrier, GO GET THEM was obliged to race wide and without cover for the majority of the race. Near the 300 Metres, CHAMPION BOY was steadied when crowded for room by FORM FIT which shifted in to improve inside FOR YOUR EYES ONLY. In the Straight, FANTASTIC HORSE hung in and proved difficult to ride out. When questioned regarding the improved performance of BUDDIES POWER, Mr C H Yip, trainer of the horse, said his riding instructions to K H Ting today were the same as issued for each of the horse's previous three runs since the horse joined his stable. He said BUDDIES POWER's last two races were over 1000 Metres and the riders on those occasions said the horse had not shown enough pace to lead and at times had been difficult to manage. He said since the horse last raced on 12 February 2003, it had been gelded and appeared much more settled. The Stewards accepted the explanations of Mr Yip. E Legrix (NICE MEMORIES) said the horse appeared short in its action during its preliminary, however, after arriving at the Start, he gave the horse a good warm up and it freed up in its action. He said he was not concerned prior to the race because he was aware it was not unusual for NICE MEMORIES to work to the Start somewhat short in its action. He said NICE MEMORIES began well, however, shortly after the start was reluctant to stride out, gave ground quickly and dropped to the rear. He said he continued to ride NICE MEMORIES along, however, the horse did not improve and in the Straight he did not persevere. NICE MEMORIES was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A subsequent veterinary examination of NICE MEMORIES did not reveal any abnormalities. The performance of NICE MEMORIES was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, it must perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. MULTI-WIN, FORTUNE LAD, BUDDIES POWER and HAPPY YEARS were sent for sampling.
