Racing Incident Report

COSMO SUCCESS began awkwardly, got its head up and as a consequence lost ground. SOUTH CHINA NINETY began awkwardly, then in the early stages hung in. From the outside barrier, WINNING LAURELS was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position closer to the rail. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, ABLE EAGLE got its head on the side, shifted out and was checked away from the heels of THE ONLY ONE. Near the 900 Metres, MANAU was steadied away from the heels of JOYFUL MASTER which shifted in slightly. After the 600 Metres, EVEREST shifted in, bumped the hindquarters of HIGHLAND DAWN and became unbalanced. On straightening, ABLE EAGLE, which had been held up for running, was steadied and shifted out away from the heels of BEAMING RIVER. In the Straight, WISDOM EXPRESS (R Fradd) hung in and at the 200 Metres shifted in at the same time as JOYFUL MASTER was straightened and shifted out. This caused MANAU to be disappointed for running between those two horses. R Fradd was reprimanded and told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding sooner than he did on this occasion. W Woods (JOYFUL MASTER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 200 Metres he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of ABLE EAGLE, causing that horse to be carried in and caused crowding on its inside to EVEREST which as a result lost its rightful running and be checked. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was for W Woods' licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Thursday 2 October 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Sunday 21 September 2003. At the Sha Tin Racecourse next Sunday, the Stewards will afford K S Yu an opportunity of explaining his ride over the concluding stages on COSMO SUCCESS. HIGHLAND DAWN and ABLE EAGLE were sent for sampling.
