Racing Incident Report

LIGHT FOOT, which was to be ridden forward today, bounded in the air when the gates opened, lost ground and consequently got well back. ABLE EAGLE, which was fractious in the barriers, began awkwardly and shifted out abruptly across the running of TANAHMERAH which itself had been a little slow to begin. MADE TO FIGURE and CLAWS OF THUNDER were slow to begin. G Mossé (CHINOOK) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that after passing the winning post on the first occasion he permitted his mount to shift in when not clear of ABLE EAGLE, causing that horse to be carried in and caused crowding on its inside to SUGAR AND SPICE which in turn shifted in across the rightful running of FORTUNE MASTER which as a result was checked [Rule 100(1)]. After FORTUNE MASTER was checked, it shifted out and bumped TANAHMERAH which was racing to its outside. Some inconvenience was also caused to LIGHT FOOT which was following. In the circumstances of this case, the Stewards believed the appropriate penalty was for G Mossé to be suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Sunday 9 November 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley meeting next Wednesday 29 October 2003. Near the 1200 Metres, FORTUNE MASTER, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up and was checked away from the heels of TANAHMERAH. MADE TO FIGURE, which was following, was carried wider and without cover for the remainder of the race. In the early and middle stages, MAGICAL LOT proved difficult to settle and got its head up on a number of occasions. At the 500 Metres, FORTUNE MASTER was bumped and carried wider when TANAHMERAH shifted to the outside of CLAWS OF THUNDER to improve. Coming off the Home Turn, LIGHT FOOT was carried out by SUGAR AND SPICE and then on straightening was shifted to the outside of FORTUNE MASTER. On straightening, CLAWS OF THUNDER was steadied and shifted in away from the heels of MADE TO FIGURE. Near the 200 Metres, GOLD FIELD became unbalanced, initially shifted out and then shifted in. Also near the 200 Metres, SUGAR AND SPICE was steadied and shifted in to avoid the heels of MADE TO FIGURE which was giving ground. Apprentice K T Yeung (MAGICAL LOT), in the presence of his allocated trainer, Mr D A Hayes, pleaded guilty to a charge of having failed to ride his mount out to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the Stewards and was fined $20,000 [Rule 100(2)]. A Delpech (LIGHT FOOT) explained the intention was to have the horse as far forward as possible today, however, after beginning badly LIGHT FOOT at no stage of the race travelled as he had hoped, was unbalanced on the turns and in his opinion did not handle Happy Valley today. LIGHT FOOT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, LIGHT FOOT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. TANAHMERAH, FIGHTING MASCOT and CHINOOK were sent for sampling. Following the race, it was reported GOLD FIELD had bled from both nostrils.
