Racing Incident Report

SCREAMING EAGLE was withdrawn on 27.11.03 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter GOODWOOD. Before being allowed to race again, SCREAMING EAGLE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. After arriving at the Start, it was noted BUDDIES POWER had blood in its mouth. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said it had a small laceration to its tongue and in his opinion was suitable to race. When the gates opened, LUCKY MARAUDING, which had its head turned to the left, got its head up, bounded in the air and began very awkwardly. MAGIC TEMPLE, which was standing badly, began very awkwardly, bumped the inside gate of its stall and lost a significant amount of ground. ACCLAMATION was slow to begin. At the 1300 Metres, LUCKY MASTER, which was shifting in, was steadied away from the heels of KING PALM. In the early stages, BULLISH KID proved very difficult to settle and on a number of occasions got its head up. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, MAJIN BUU and LUCKY MARAUDING got their heads up when over-racing. Also at the 800 Metres, ACCLAMATION was steadied away from the heels of LUCKY MASTER. Making the turn after the 800 Metres, KING PALM was carried wider by BULLISH KID which shifted ground while hanging. After this, KING PALM remained racing wide and without cover. Making the Home Turn, CHECK MATE hung out. Near the 300 Metres, LUCKY MARAUDING got its head on the side, shifted in and was checked away from the heels of SHANGHAI DELIGHT. J Quinn (ACCLAMATION) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 200 Metres he shifted his mount in when not clear of MAJIN BUU, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. J Quinn was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Monday 15 December 2003 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Sha Tin meeting next Wednesday 3 December 2003. For some distance after the 100 Metres, KING PALM was awkwardly placed inside the heels of FORTUNE BUILDER which was shifting in. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in while they considered if ON SHAN EXPRESS had had an unfair start. The official videos of the start were viewed. D Dunn, the rider of ON SHAN EXPRESS, was interviewed. It was established that after the field had been loaded and before the start had been effected, ON SHAN EXPRESS became fractious, lunged forward and broke open the front gate of its stall. ON SHAN EXPRESS was then taken hold of by an attendant and as this was done, the Starter released the field. As ON SHAN EXPRESS was held by an attendant, it was not able to jump with the field and consequently lost a significant amount of ground. The Stewards considered ON SHAN EXPRESS had had an unfair start and accordingly deemed the horse to be a non-runner [Rule 12(19)]. LUCKY MARAUDING, GOODWOOD and ACCLAMATION were sent for sampling.
