Racing Incident Report

SEASONS KNACK was slow to begin. OLIVE OR TWIST was a little slow to begin. JUST IN TIME and GOT IT RIGHT bumped on jumping, then shortly afterwards JUST IN TIME was checked when crowded for room between YACHT MASTER and GOT IT RIGHT, both of which shifted ground. After passing the winning post on the first occasion, YACHT MASTER was crowded for room between THE RICH MAN and GOT IT RIGHT which shifted in away from A BETTER DRAGON. Shortly after this, THE RICH MAN got its head up when close to the heels of SMART WIN. Near the 1200 Metres, YACHT MASTER was again crowded for room inside GOT IT RIGHT which was racing tight inside the heels of A BETTER DRAGON. At the 1100 Metres, YACHT MASTER, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when momentarily crowded for room inside A BETTER DRAGON (W Smith). W Smith was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. Making the Home Turn, KASHMAC was held up when awkwardly placed close to the heels of MAGICAL WARRIOR which itself was being steadied when awkwardly placed behind THE RICH MAN which got its head up when being steadied when tight inside the hindquarters of MOUNTAIN KING. No action was taken. Shortly after straightening, YACHT MASTER was steadied and shifted out abruptly away from the heels of A BETTER DRAGON which was giving ground. Throughout the race, GOT IT RIGHT raced wide and without cover. The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in as they were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred in the Straight which cast sufficient doubt on whether CHARIOT OF WEI HAI should be declared 3rd placegetter. They decided there was justification to have the matter resolved formally and openly at a protest/objection hearing (Rule 123). Y T Cheng, the rider of SMART WIN, 4th placegetter, also lodged a protest/objection against CHARIOT OF WEI HAI (Apprentice P H Lo) being declared 3rd placegetter alleging interference to his mount around the Home Turn and in the Straight. Following the conduct of a formal hearing, the Stewards were of the opinion that whilst CHARIOT OF WEI HAI got its head on the side and shifted out after the 200 Metres, causing SMART WIN to be inconvenienced and carried wider, they did not consider, bearing in mind the half length margin between the two horses at the finish of the race, that SMART WIN would have finished in front of CHARIOT OF WEI HAI had the interference which did take place not occurred. Accordingly the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. At a subsequent inquiry, Apprentice P H Lo was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to stop riding and straighten his mount sooner than he did on this occasion. W Smith said he had been instructed tonight from the outside barrier to make use of A BETTER DRAGON which was having its first start in blinkers tonight and to race in a forward position if possible. He said he began well, immediately rode along into a forward position, however, was obliged to race wide and without cover. Mr K L Man, the trainer of A BETTER DRAGON, confirmed the instructions issued to W Smith. He said because tonight's race was being run on the C course, he felt it was in the best interests to have A BETTER DRAGON which was racing in blinkers for the first time tonight in a forward position in an attempt to overcome its outside draw. D Whyte (YACHT MASTER) said the horse over-raced in the early stages, however, after the 1000 Metres settle nicely. He said he became concerned with YACHT MASTER as it did not appear to be striding out as it should passing the 500 Metres, then in the Straight when asked for an effort did not respond. Before being allowed to race again, YACHT MASTER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. YACHT MASTER was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of YACHT MASTER after the race did not show any significant findings. SEASONS KNACK and OLIVE OR TWIST were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 29 January 2004)
YACHT MASTER, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. YACHT MASTER was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer C H Yip this morning. He said at this time the horse was noted to be lame in the left hind leg. As previously advised, YACHT MASTER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
