Racing Incident Report

On arriving at the holding stables, it was noted JUST TOO GOOD had shifted its left fore plate. This plate was re-set. The horse was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said it was suitable to race. BRAVE COMMANDER bounded in the air at the start. JUST TOO GOOD began awkwardly. From a gate towards the outside, DIVINE FEELING was steadied and shifted in across behind runners to a position closer to the rail. Shortly after the start, JUST TOO GOOD was steadied when briefly crowded for room between HIGHLAND DAWN and NATURAL MODEL which was taken in by BRAVE COMMANDER. Shortly after this, NATURAL MODEL got its head up when being steadied off the heels of BRAVE COMMANDER. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, JUST TOO GOOD was again crowded for room by FLYING KENNY which was taken in slightly by ISLAND SPIRIT. Also passing the winning post on the first occasion, NATURAL MODEL and HIGHLAND DAWN bumped. After this, NATURAL MODEL commenced to race fiercely, got its head up when being checked off the heels of THE ONLY ONE and then raced close to that horse's heels for some distance before being allowed to stride forward around THE ONLY ONE near the 1100 Metres. ISLAND SPIRIT, which was following NATURAL MODEL, was hampered in consequence. OPTIC CHIEF, which was racing to the outside of NATURAL MODEL, was taken wider as a result of NATURAL MODEL shifting out. As a result of this, OPTIC CHIEF raced wide and without cover for the remainder of the race and in the Straight gave ground. When the pace slackened passing the 1200 Metres, BRAVE COMMANDER commenced to over-race, was checked off the heels of CHINA WORLD and shifted out off the heels of that horse. At the 1000 Metres, FLYING KENNY commenced to over-race, was checked off the heels of THE ONLY ONE, shifted out and bumped ISLAND SPIRIT. Passing the 200 Metres, JUST TOO GOOD was steadied and shifted to the outside of FLYING KENNY when disappointed for running between that horse and THE ONLY ONE which shifted out slightly. When questioned regarding the performance of the winner STEPS AHEAD which was having its first start at Happy Valley tonight as compared to its most recent start at Sha Tin on 30 October 2004, Trainer C S Shum said he was disappointed by the run of STEPS AHEAD on that occasion. He said for this reason he added blinkers to STEPS AHEAD in its track work and the horse worked much better in this gear, firstly when ridden by himself in track work last Saturday and again in a 1800 Metre gallop last Monday. Mr Shum added he was also of the belief STEPS AHEAD was aided by the claim of Apprentice H W Lai and that the horse was suited by being able to lead in the race tonight. NATURAL MODEL was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of NATURAL MODEL after the race did not show any significant findings. STEPS AHEAD and THE ONLY ONE were sent for sampling.
