Racing Incident Report

Prior to the running of Race 1, JUST IN TIME was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon. He said the horse had a fever and also an infection to the right front elbow. As such, JUST IN TIME was not suitable to race. Acting on this advice, the Stewards ordered the withdrawal of the horse. Before being allowed to race again, JUST IN TIME will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. KING OF SPADES, which was standing badly, began awkwardly, then was bumped by AMBITIOUS LEADER which also began awkwardly and shifted in. HARVEST was slow to begin. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, SUNNY DESERT, which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of AMBITIOUS LEADER and tight inside STRONG GALLOP, became unbalanced and bumped the running rail. KING OF SPADES, which was following, was steadied in consequence. Near the 250 Metres, SUNNY DESERT was steadied and shifted out to avoid the heels of KING ERIE which at this time shifted in. For some distance after the 250 Metres, KING OF SPADES had some difficulty obtaining clear running between STRONG GALLOP and GOOD FRIENDS. At the 200 Metres, STRONG GALLOP, which was giving ground, was bumped by SUNNY DESERT which shifted out. Near the 100 Metres, KING OF SPADES was steadied and shifted to the outside of GOOD FRIENDS into clear running and in doing so bumped HAPPY CONTENDER. Throughout the race, RED BARON raced wide and without cover. Y T Cheng (HAPPY CONTENDER), 7th placegetter, was reminded of his responsibility to ride his mounts out at least hands and heels to the winning post wherever possible. D Dunn (STRONG GALLOP), which performed poorly, said the horse's work leading into tonight's race was good. He said STRONG GALLOP travelled a little further forward than he had wanted, however, after beginning well the horse obtained this position without being ridden to do so. He said STRONG GALLOP travelled comfortably throughout the run, however, in the final 100 Metres shortened its stride noticeably and gave ground quickly. He said following the race STRONG GALLOP appeared normal in its action. He did point out STRONG GALLOP was racing over an increased distance tonight, however, he was not sure this could fully account for the horse's performance. A Starke (SUNNY DESERT) explained approaching the winning post the first time AMBITIOUS LEADER, which had drawn to his inside, was being ridden along to hold the position on the rail. He said he had been instructed to ride SUNNY DESERT on the rail, he therefore elected to check his mount, come back behind AMBITIOUS LEADER and shift to the fence. When SUNNY DESERT was being checked, HARVEST and HAPPY CONTENDER, which were following, were checked in consequence. No action was taken. HAPPY CONTENDER was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of HAPPY CONTENDER after the race did not show any significant findings. KING OF SPADES, FLYING SUCCESS and SUNNY DESERT were sent for sampling.
