Racing Incident Report

As the gates opened, KING OF TURBOT reared, began awkwardly and lost a considerable amount of ground at the start. Also when the gates opened, PORT OF HOPE bounded in the air and lost ground. NIGHT HUNTER II was slow to begin. From the outside gate, COSMO STAR was a little slow to begin, then was steadied away from the heels of FIRST KNIGHT and shifted out. After this, COSMO STAR was shifted across behind runners to a position with cover. Near the 1500 Metres, WIN FOR ABALONE and SPECTACULAR TIMES were steadied when crowded for room inside JOY AND TREASURE (C Williams) which shifted in when not properly clear. C Williams was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. Shortly after this incident, WIN FOR ABALONE and SPECTACULAR TIMES bumped and became unbalanced. In the early stages, SAMMY TREASURE and SPECTACULAR TIMES proved difficult to settle. In the middle stages, SPECTACULAR TIMES hung out. Just prior to straightening, WIN FOR ABALONE, which shifted out slightly, blundered when awkwardly placed close to the heels of RENA'S WUNDERBAR which also shifted in slightly. The occurrence in the opinion of the Stewards was accidental. Making the Home Turn, L'ENFANT was awkwardly placed inside the heels of SAMMY TREASURE. After straightening, L'ENFANT was shifted out to find clear running and in doing so bumped RENA'S WUNDERBAR. After the 300 Metres, KING OF TURBOT shifted out abruptly when under pressure. Passing the 200 Metres, SAMMY TREASURE was held up and unable to improve between SPECTACULAR TIMES and JOY AND TREASURE which was drifting out. D Whyte (RENA'S WUNDERBAR) explained his mount began well, but did not muster speed in the early stages. He said he therefore elected not to push forward to clear JOY AND TREASURE which was improving to his inside but rather to steady and come back to a position behind SPECTACULAR TIMES. He said when he did this SPECTACULAR TIMES was able to shift in and obtain cover and consequently RENA'S WUNDERBAR travelled wide and without cover throughout. He said in the Straight he placed RENA'S WUNDERBAR under pressure, however, the horse failed to respond to his riding and he was concerned with the horse's action, therefore over the concluding stages he did not ride his mount out. RENA'S WUNDERBAR was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, RENA'S WUNDERBAR was examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. Before being allowed to race again, RENA'S WUNDERBAR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. NIGHT HUNTER II was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of NIGHT HUNTER II after the race did not show any significant findings. The performance of NIGHT HUNTER II, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, NIGHT HUNTER II will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. PORT OF HOPE and THE FACULTY were sent for sampling.
