Racing Incident Report

DR WELL, which was fractious after being boxed, was removed from the starting gates and examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who said in his opinion it was suitable to race. As the start was effected, MIGHTY HUGO lunged forward and made contact with the front gates of its stall which opened fractionally before the others. CLASSIC DELIGHT was slow to begin. NORTHERNER began awkwardly and lost ground. On jumping, EQUATOR KID shifted in and bumped the inside gate of its stall, causing D Whyte, its rider, to become unbalanced. Near the 1700 Metres, PHANTOM THIEF and SHANGHAI LAD were crowded for room inside MIGHTY HUGO which momentarily shifted in. Near the 1500 Metres, FLAMING LAMBORGINI was checked when crowded for room between NORTHERNER which when proving difficult to settle shifted out slightly and DR WELL which initially got its head on the side and shifted in away from SAVUTE and then was momentarily carried in further by that runner. In the circumstances, no action was taken. In the early and middle stages, NORTHERNER and MIGHTY HUGO proved difficult to settle. On straightening, NORTHERNER was bumped by EQUATOR KID which shifted to the outside of SAVUTE into clear running. After the 400 Metres, LOTZATOW was held up and unable to obtain clear running. For some distance approaching and passing the 300 Metres, RED PEPPER had difficulty obtaining clear running between DR WELL which was giving ground and RIVER ESPERANTO. For the majority of the Home Straight, SHANGHAI LAD was unable to obtain clear running when initially racing behind VERY FIT and PHANTOM THIEF and then after the 200 Metres between PHANTOM THIEF and MIGHTY HUGO. For the major part of the race, DR WELL raced wide and without cover. VERY FIT was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of VERY FIT after the race did not show any significant findings. PHANTOM THIEF was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported PHANTOM THIEF was bleeding from the mouth as a result of a laceration to the tongue. LOTZATOW and RIVER ESPERANTO were sent for sampling.
