Racing Incident Report

BEAR DOMINANCE was slow to begin, then lost further ground when crowded for room between AQUA-TREASURE and WONG'S FAVOURITE which shifted in after being bumped by AMSTERDAM. In the early stages, SMACKO, which from the outside barrier, was taken across behind runners, got its head up and proved difficult to settle. At the 1400 Metres, MAVERICK shifted out from behind AQUA-TREASURE. Because of this, MATIRI KING was carried into a three wide position without cover. At the 400 Metres, MASTERY was steadied and shifted out across the heels of NASA PEARL. Making the Home Turn, SMACKO was carried wider by MASTERY. In the Straight, BEAR DOMINANCE hung in. When questioned, M Odendaal (SMACKO) said after being carried wider making the Home Turn and in the early part of the Straight he balanced the horse and rode it along hands and heels. He said approaching the 200 Metres he used the whip in his right hand, however, the horse changed legs and gave him the feeling that it would shift out. He said therefore he changed the whip into his left hand, however, SMACKO immediately commenced to hang in and was awkwardly placed on the hindquarters of MASTERY. He said SMACKO continued to hang in when under pressure over the concluding stages and because of this he was not able to ride his mount out fully. O Doleuze (CHEERFUL HEART) explained from a wide barrier he was wide and without cover in the early stages and therefore when the tempo of the race steadied approaching the winning post on the first occasion, he allowed CHEERFUL HEART to stride forward and lead. He said CHEERFUL HEART led comfortably, however, when MATIRI KING was ridden to go forward at the 700 Metres, he allowed that horse to cross to the fence as in his opinion to have gone forward and held his position inside that runner would have required him to make too much use of CHEERFUL HEART. He said CHEERFUL HEART then travelled comfortably behind MATIRI KING, however, when placed under pressure at the 400 Metres failed to respond to his riding. AQUA-TREASURE and CHEERFUL HEART were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of AQUA-TREASURE and CHEERFUL HEART after the race did not show any significant findings. MAVERICK and AMSTERDAM were sent for sampling.
