Racing Incident Report

SIKANDER began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped ALL CHANCES. From outside barriers, LHOJONG, GREENESSY and MEDICO were taken across behind runners. Shortly after the start, NOBLE HEART and ALL CHANCES bumped. Making the first turn, ALL CHANCES was awkwardly placed outside SIKANDER and inside the heels of NOBLE HEART. Near the 1700 Metres, DR WELL was checked to avoid the heels of NOBLE HEART (Apprentice C K Tong) which after crossing when barely clear then steadied. Apprentice Tong was told to ensure he does not steady his mounts in similar circumstances. Approaching the 300 Metres, FUJI SUNRISE had difficulty obtaining clear running and near the 200 Metres became unbalanced when improving into a narrow run between NOBLE HEART and ALL CHANCES which were giving ground. For the majority of the race, ALL CHANCES travelled wide and without cover. The performance of GREENESSY, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, GREENESSY will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned, D Beadman (SIKANDER) said he had been instructed to ride the horse positively from a favourable barrier. He said it was anticipated the horse would be behind the leaders. He said after SIKANDER began awkwardly, he rode the horse along to follow the riding instructions he had been issued, however, a number of runners went forward with him and therefore near the 1600 Metres when he was racing wide and without cover, he rode SIKANDER along to shift across and race outside the leader. He said prior to straightening SIKANDER commenced to give ground quickly. Mr C Fownes, trainer of SIKANDER, confirmed the riding instructions issued to D Beadman. He said the horse had been disappointing in its recent performances. He said earlier in its racing career SIKANDER when racing at Happy Valley was successful when being ridden in a more forward position, therefore from a favourable barrier he decided in a race that appeared to have only average speed that it might be to the horse's advantage to be ridden in a forward position. Mr Fownes was told in similar circumstances he would be expected to notify the Stewards of intended changes in riding instructions. The performance of SIKANDER, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, SIKANDER will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SIKANDER and ALL CHANCES were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SIKANDER after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, ALL CHANCES was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, ALL CHANCES will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. NORTHERNER and ELECTRONICS SPUR were sent for sampling. Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the trachea of MEDICO. Before being allowed to race again, MEDICO will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
