Racing Incident Report

SPECIAL DAYS began awkwardly and lost ground. On jumping, MEDICO shifted in and was steadied away from the heels of JOYFUL YEARS. After the 1100 Metres, SUPER MUSIC became unbalanced. After the 500 Metres, NICE KING was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of BEST POWER. At the same time, MEDICO was steadied away from the heels of SPECIAL DAYS. Making the Home Turn, JOYFUL YEARS hung out. For some distance approaching the 200 Metres, MEDICO had difficulty obtaining clear running. In the Straight, AMAZING ME and SOUTH BREEZE hung out and FIRST BABY hung in. F Coetzee (FIRST BABY) explained he had been instructed to ride the horse in midfield with cover if possible. He said FIRST BABY began only fairly, a number of runners on his inside went forward of him and he therefore shortly after the start elected to steady his mount to ensure it obtained a position with cover. He said when he did this SOUTH BREEZE steadied at the same time and as a consequence he travelled further back than intended. He said in his opinion if he had ridden forward in the early stages, FIRST BABY would have been left racing wide and without cover. When questioned, Mr D J Hall, trainer of BODACIOUS, said he had instructed M W Leung, the horse’s rider, to take the horse back from a wide barrier. He said he anticipated the pace of the race would be fair. He said at its most recent starts when being ridden forward, BODACIOUS had been disappointing in the manner in which it finished its races off and in his opinion appeared weak. He said today he wanted the horse to be ridden quietly to see if it was able to close the race off more strongly. M W Leung confirmed the riding instructions issued. Mr Hall said when being ridden quietly today, BODACIOUS only closed the race off fairly. He said if in the future the horse draws a favourable barrier, the intention would be to have the horse ridden in a forward position. He said however if BODACIOUS draws wide, depending on the circumstances of the race, he would again ask the rider not to make use of the horse in the early stages to obtain a forward position but rather have the horse ridden somewhere around midfield if possible. He said if the horse does not perform well when ridden in midfield, he may then revert to having the horse ridden in a forward position from outside draws. When questioned regarding the poor performance of SHANGDONG GENERAL, Apprentice K L Chui said he went forward from a wide barrier as instructed, however, he was not able to obtain a position with cover. He said making the turn at the 800 Metres AMAZING ME shifted away from the rail and carried him into a three wide position. He said SHANGDONG GENERAL was today increasing in distance to 1600 Metres and in his opinion after having a wide run for the major part of the race the horse did not run the distance out at its first time of asking. SHANGDONG GENERAL and BODACIOUS were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SHANGDONG GENERAL and BODACIOUS after the race did not show any significant findings. SPECIAL DAYS, KING ACRYLIC and BOLD WIN were sent for sampling.
