Racing Incident Report

ENGINEERING WONDER, HOLD HANDS and NOBLE HEART were slow to begin. MERIDIAN PRIDE began awkwardly and then was slow to muster speed. With the intention of being ridden with cover, GALBRAITH proved difficult to settle in the early stages. Due to the tempo of the race, near the 1100 Metres, a number of horses raced ungenerously and got their heads up. These included MERIDIAN PRIDE, ENGINEERING WONDER and MAGIC SWEEP. When ENGINEERING WONDER got its head up, it shifted out and caused inconvenience to POS TRUMPS. In the middle stages, VIKING TOR travelled wide and without cover. Near the 600 Metres, ENGINEERING WONDER, which was continuing to prove difficult to settle, was steadied away from the heels of POS TRUMPS. After the 300 Metres, REALLY HAPPY was shifted towards the inside of THUNDER DANCING in an endeavour to continue going forward. After the 200 Metres, REALLY HAPPY was then shifted to the outside of SOLAR ENERGY as that horse and THUNDER DANCING shifted in. Also after the 200 Metres, MERIDIAN PRIDE was steadied away from the heels of REALLY HAPPY. The declaration of weighed-in was deferred as the Stewards were of the opinion an incident occurred near the 200 Metres which cast doubt on whether SOLAR ENERGY ought be declared the winner of the race. Consideration was given to a protest/objection lodged by H W Lai (THUNDER DANCING), 2nd placegetter, against SOLAR ENERGY (S K Sit) being declared the winner alleging interference near the 200 Metres. The evidence disclosed that near the 200 Metres SOLAR ENERGY shifted in, bumped THUNDER DANCING and carried that horse in. As the Stewards considered, bearing in mind the neck margin between the horses at the end of the race, that had the interference to THUNDER DANCING not occurred, that horse would not have finished in front of SOLAR ENERGY, the protest/objection was overruled and weighed-in was declared as the numbers semaphored by the Judge. MERIDIAN PRIDE and ENCORE WIN were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of MERIDIAN PRIDE and ENCORE WIN after the race did not show any significant findings. REALLY HAPPY, SOLAR ENERGY and THUNDER DANCING were sent for sampling.
