Racing Incident Report

NEW DYNASTY left the gates very awkwardly, shifted out and bumped the hindquarters of PO ON WIN. UTMOST EASY left the gates with its head in the air and just after the start bumped the hindquarters of PERFECT VICTORY. About 50 Metres after the start, UTMOST EASY and PERFECT VICTORY were crowded for room between TRULY THE BEST and WISHES which got its head on the side and shifted in away from COGITO. In the early stages, CHEROKEE EXPRESS over-raced and proved difficult to settle. For some distance after the 800 Metres, NEW DYNASTY, which was pulling, raced awkwardly on the heels of UTMOST EASY. Near the 700 Metres, WISHES shifted out and caused some inconvenience to CLEVER CITATION. About the 600 Metres, NEW DYNASTY shifted out slightly and caused some inconvenience to ELECTRONIC SEEKER. Also about the 600 Metres, WAH YAN FORTUNE was steadied when racing close to the heels of SENTIMENTAL MUSIC. F Coetzee (CHEROKEE EXPRESS) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that near the 400 Metres he allowed his mount to shift out when not clear of THE GREATEST. This resulted in THE GREATEST losing the running to which it was rightfully entitled and becoming unbalanced when being checked off the heels of CHEROKEE EXPRESS. F Coetzee was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Wednesday 7 November 2001 on which day he may resume race riding (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Happy Valley next Saturday, 27 October 2001. The Stewards charged S Baster (WISHES) with careless riding [Rule 100(1).] The careless riding being that near the 400 Metres he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of COGITO. As a consequence of this, COGITO was crowded onto THE GREATEST, lost the running to which it was rightfully entitled and was checked. S Baster pleaded not guilty to the charge and after listening to the submissions he made in respect of the matter, the Stewards took the view that there was some doubt, the benefit of which should be given to S Baster. Therefore the charge was not sustained and accordingly no action was taken. Just after the 400 Metres, NEW DYNASTY was steadied and shifted out to obtain running and go forward. Near the winning post, COGITO and WAH YAN FORTUNE were crowded for room between WISHES which shifted out slightly and ELECTRONIC SEEKER which shifted in slightly. Whilst the Stewards considered the riding of G Mossé (GRAND FIGHTER) in the run to the line did not affect the horse's finishing position and accordingly a breach of Rule 100(2) did not occur, they did however advise G Mossé he must ride all mounts out at least hands and heels to the end of the race whenever possible. THE GREATEST was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon said TRULY THE BEST had sustained a laceration at the back of its near side knee.
