Racing Incident Report
BRILLIANT LEADER jumped awkwardly, threw its head about and just after the start was checked rather abruptly to avoid the heels of OCEAN CHANNEL which on leaving the gates shifted in abruptly. HAPPY FORTUNE came from the stalls awkwardly, threw its head about and just after jumping made contact with TREMENDOUS WAY. A Marcus (STAR WARRIOR) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)]. The careless riding being that in the run to first turn he allowed his mount to shift in when not clear of CLEVER CITATION. As a consequence of this, CLEVER CITATION was carried in and unnecessary crowding occurred on its inside, the main sufferers were HEART'S DESIRE, FAT CHOY TOGETHER and AQUA PRINCE. Inconvenience was also caused to PRODIGY and RECOGNITION which were following. After taking into account all evidence and significant submissions put by A Marcus and bearing in mind his current contract with the Hong Kong Jockey Club expires on 17 December 2001, it was decided the appropriate penalty was for his licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Sunday 9 December 2001 on which day he may resume race racing (3 Hong Kong race days). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the meeting at Happy Valley next Wednesday night, 28 November 2001. About the 1400 Metres, FAT CHOY TOGETHER shifted out from behind OCEAN CHANNEL, this momentarily obliged HEART'S DESIRE to race wider and as it shifted ground, some inconvenience was caused to MONEY WINS and TELECOM TWIN which was racing wide and without any cover. About the 600 Metres, TELECOM TWIN was unbalanced when awkwardly placed close to the heels of RECOGNITION and tight between HAPPY FORTUNE and HEART'S DESIRE. In the Straight, BRILLIANT LEADER hung in rather badly. D Dunn (OCEAN CHANNEL) said his instructions today had been to ride the horse somewhere about midfield. He said OCEAN CHANNEL left the gates well and with blinkers on for the first time today got straight on the bit and went further forward than he would have liked. He said in the early stages OCEAN CHANNEL was inclined to pull, but early in the Back Straight when FAT CHOY TOGETHER went forward he was able to obtain cover and OCEAN CHANNEL settled better. He said the horse travelled satisfactorily behind FAT CHOY TOGETHER until about the 800 Metres, but thereafter commenced to give ground and over the concluding stages was very disappointing. OCEAN CHANNEL and AQUA PRINCE were sent for clinical veterinary examination and testing. After the race, the Veterinary Surgeon said OCEAN CHANNEL had sustained lacerations to the back of its off side hind fetlock joint. Following the race, the Veterinary Surgeon conducted an endoscopic examination of AQUA PRINCE. He said this revealed a moderate amount of blood in the windpipe of the horse.
