Racing Incident Report
The Stewards deferred the declaration of weighed-in while they considered if PENTACLES and SILVER JET had had an unfair start. The official videos of the start were viewed. Apprentice M W Leung, rider of SILVER JET, was interviewed. It was established that after being loaded into stall 11, PENTACLES became fractious and reared, because of this S K Sit, its rider, dismounted and stood on the inside partition of its stall. When the gates were released, PENTACLES was riderless. Apprentice M W Leung said he became aware a runner drawn towards the outside was fractious prior to the start. He said because of this he was looking to his outside when the gates were released. He said he did have his feet in the stirrups, however, as SILVER JET jumped, it began awkwardly and bumped the inside of its stall, causing his right foot to slip from his stirrup, resulting in him becoming badly unbalanced and being dislodged. The Stewards considered that PENTACLES had had an unfair start and accordingly deemed the horse to be a non-runner [Rule 12(19)]. As SILVER JET was standing correctly when the start was effected, the Stewards deemed SILVER JET to have had a fair start and was therefore declared a runner. At a subsequent inquiry, the Starter, Mr P Waldron, and the Assistant Starter, Mr C Chow were interviewed. Mr Waldron said he was aware PENTACLES had reared after being boxed, however, he was unaware S K Sit, its rider, had dismounted. He said prior to releasing the field, he checked all horses and saw they were standing correctly and then he checked to ensure Mr Chow, who was positioned behind the barriers, had raised the flag which signifies everything is clear behind the gates. He then released the field. Mr Chow said after all runners were loaded and the back gates of the barriers were shut, he raised the flag to signify this to the Starter. He said after this he saw PENTACLES rear and its rider dismount, he looked to see if the Veterinary Surgeon positioned at the Start was going to have the horse removed from the stall to be inspected. While he did this, he continued to have the flag raised and the Starter released the field. The Stewards advised Mr Waldron and Mr Chow in the circumstances the start clearly should not have been effected, and a further review of this incident will be conducted. PLEASANT SUCCESS, which was standing with its head turned to the left hand side, was slow to begin. RICARDO was slow to begin. On jumping, SIXTY SECONDS shifted in and bumped EL VIENTO. Also on jumping, MAGNIFICENT was bumped by WONDERFUL LIFE which shifted out abruptly. GOLDEN SPIRIT began awkwardly with its head up and shifted out. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, when being steadied, TRULY CONTENT got its head up, then was bumped by EL VIENTO which shifted in. TRULY CONTENT continued to prove difficult to settle for some distance after this. Also near the winning post on the first occasion, RICARDO was inconvenienced by SILVER JET. Making the turn at the 1200 Metres, TRULY CONTENT and GOLDEN SPIRIT were steadied when inconvenienced by SILVER JET. For some distance after the 1200 Metres, EL VIENTO was hampered and carried significantly wider by SILVER JET. Making the turn after the 1200 Metres, GOLDEN SPIRIT got its head up and proved difficult to settle. At the 1100 Metres, RICARDO was steadied when momentarily crowded by PENTACLES. At the 600 Metres, TRULY CONTENT was bumped by GOLDEN SPIRIT which shifted in. Also at the 600 Metres, RICARDO and PLEASANT SUCCESS were momentarily crowded for room when tight inside the heels of EL VIENTO which shifted in. After this, PLEASANT SUCCESS was steadied and shifted to the outside of EL VIENTO to go forward. After the 600 Metres, LONGMARK was severely checked when crowded for room by SILVER JET which shifted in. On straightening, GOLDEN SPIRIT was checked when racing tight inside PENTACLES and endeavouring to shift to the outside of MAGNIFICENT to go forward. At the 400 Metres, LONGMARK was again steadied when awkwardly placed inside the heels of SILVER JET. Inconvenience was caused to SIXTY SECONDS and TRULY CONTENT which were following. After the 300 Metres, TRULY CONTENT became unbalanced, shifted in and bumped the running rail. G Mossé (MAGNIFICENT), which performed poorly, said he had ridden the horse in its last race start and also in a turf gallop last Saturday morning and on these occasions the horse appreciated the firm surface. He said tonight with the surface not being as firm, the horse's action did not appear normal and in his opinion it did not handle tonight's going. GOLDEN SPIRIT was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, GOLDEN SPIRIT was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No significant findings were made. MAGNIFICENT, SIXTY SECONDS and WONDERFUL LIFE were sent for sampling.
