Racing Incident Report

EASY GAME and MOUNT MEDIC were slow to begin. THE ACHIEVER was a little slow to begin. From the outside gate, ENGINEERING WONDER was immediately steadied and shifted across behind runners to a position close to the rail. KEV BUSHIDO, which was to be ridden forward, was ridden along in the early stages, failed to muster speed and raced wide without cover throughout. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, SONGS OF THE SUN got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of ABLE PRINCE (A Marcus) which after reaching the lead was steadied in front. A Marcus was advised against the practice of steadying too quickly after reaching the lead. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, SONGS OF THE SUN, THE ACHIEVER and SIR OCTAVIUS all bumped the running trail. On straightening, GRANDWAY SHUTTLE became unbalanced behind after being bumped on the hindquarters by THE ACHIEVER which was shifting to the outside of EXCITING TIMES to find clear running. S Dye (SIR OCTAVIUS) said the horse may have appeared to be travelling comfortably throughout the run, however, did not feel to him as it usually does. He said when placed under pressure in the Straight SIR OCTAVIUS failed to respond to his riding and in his opinion raced like a tired horse. Mr J Size, the trainer of SIR OCTAVIUS, advised the Stewards it is now his intention to spell the horse. EXCITING TIMES was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, EXCITING TIMES was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse returned coughing and an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being permitted to race again, EXCITING TIMES will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. ABLE PRINCE and THE ACHIEVER were sent for sampling.
