Racing Incident Report

SPARKLING STAR was slow to begin. On jumping, SPEED LORD and BOLD FIGHTER were crowded for room between RUN AND WIN and VICTORY MARBLE which shifted out. LITTLE ELEPHANT began awkwardly. In the early stages, BOLD FIGHTER proved difficult to settle. Making the turn at the 700 Metres, HONOUR SUPREME, which was awkwardly placed inside the heels of V-CAN, bumped the running rail. C Williams (GOOD TRIO) said while the horse had good sprinting form before it arrived in Hong Kong, it had indicated in its barrier trials since arriving that it would not have sufficient speed to take up a forward position in tonight's race, therefore he was instructed to ensure from the outside barrier he got cover, got the horse to the outside in the Straight and ensured it finished the race off. He said immediately on jumping he allowed GOOD TRIO to drift back in the hope of finding cover, however, SPARKY, which had drawn to his inside, also drifted back and consequently he had to drop to the rear of the field to obtain cover near the 700 Metres. He said when he did this GOOD TRIO did not appreciate the kickback and because of this he slapped the horse down the shoulder with the whip at the 600 Metres to ensure it stayed on the back of SPARKY. He said making the Home Turn he had the opportunity to improve inside SPARKY, however, he was mindful of his instructions and instead shifted to the outside. He said after straightening he rode GOOD TRIO along vigorously hands and heels, however, he did not pull the whip until after the 200 Metres so as to ensure the horse hit the line which it did nicely. Mr D A Hayes, the trainer of GOOD TRIO, confirmed the riding instructions. After viewing the video, Mr Hayes said GOOD TRIO had been ridden to his instructions, however, he would have preferred to have seen the horse placed under stronger pressure sooner than it was tonight. Mr Hayes tendered evidence of his betting support for GOOD TRIO. C Williams was severely reprimanded and told his riding particularly in the early part of the Straight had come under notice and in similar circumstances he would be expected to be more vigorous than he was on this occasion at such a crucial stage of the race. RUN AND WIN and V-CAN were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, RUN AND WIN and V-CAN were examined by the Veterinary Officer who said there were no significant findings. KEY TO SUCCESS and HONOUR SUPREME were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Report (released on 13 November 2003)
V-CAN, which performed poorly, was examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer. He said at that time there were no significant findings. V-CAN was again examined by the Senior Veterinary Officer at the stables of Trainer T K Ng this morning. He said at this time he noted the horse to be lame in the left front leg. Before being allowed to race again, V-CAN will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
