Racing Incident Report
QUICK NEWS was slow to begin, then began awkwardly. SHINING GEM bounded in the air at the start. On jumping, SPRING FOUNTAIN got its head up. KINGSTON GLORY was slow to begin. In the early stages, SMART CHAMPION proved difficult to settle, near the 800 Metres got its head up and commenced to hang out. SMART CHAMPION continued to hang out for the remainder of the race. At the 800 Metres, KINGSTON GLORY was checked away from the heels of SUPER MARKSMAN which was reluctant to hold its position behind JUST IN TIME. At the 700 Metres, GALLANT HORSE, which was proving difficult to settle, was shifted out away from the heels of SMART CHAMPION. After this, GALLANT HORSE hung out. In the ealry part of the Straight, JUST IN TIME had some difficulty obtaining clear running between DOUCAI and NEW MILESTONE. When afforded the opportunity to explain the improved performance of GALLANT HORSE, Trainer C S Shum said there had been no variation in the recent work of the horse. He said earlier in the season the horse had over-raced when wearing blinkers and therefore before its last start this gear was removed, however, on that occasion GALLANT HORSE was unable to obtain cover and again over-raced, consequently did not finish the race off. He said today GALLANT HORSE appreciated the fast tempo of the race and relaxed a lot better when able to obtain some cover. He did point out GALLANT HORSE was dropping in grade today. The explanation submitted by Mr Shum was accepted. W C Marwing (MYSTIC SPIRITS) said he had not sat on the horse prior to today's race. He said Mr A S Cruz, the trainer of MYSTIC SPIRITS, advised him the horse should be competitive today, however, he was concerned that in its last gallop the horse, which is a lazy worker, was forced to work alone after its companion had dislodged its rider. He said MYSTIC SPIRITS travelled satisfactorily in the run, however, when placed under pressure felt uncomfortable in its action and did not finish the race off. MYSTIC SPIRITS was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, MYSTIC SPIRITS was examined by the Veterinary Officer. No abnormalities were detected. GALLANT HORSE and SMART CHAMPION were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted SHINING GEM had bled from both nostrils.
