Racing Incident Report

UNIVERSAL FLAIR was withdrawn on 23.12.03 on veterinary grounds (lame left fore limb) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter WATCHMAN. Before being allowed to race again, UNIVERSAL FLAIR will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. CHIU CHOW HERO began awkwardly, then was steadied away from the heels of WATCHMAN which shifted out after being bumped by ELEGANCE which on jumping shifted out abruptly. ABLE MARS began awkwardly. After the 1200 Metres, WATCHMAN, which was proving difficult to settle, was checked when awkwardly placed close to the heels of DANEPRINT. CHIU CHOW HERO, which was following, was checked in consequence. For a considerable distance after straightening, CHIU CHOW HERO had difficulty obtaining clear running initially behind DANEPRINT and then behind WATCHMAN. After the 200 Metres, DANEPRINT was steadied when unable to obtain clear running behind PREMIER BURG. Also after the 200 Metres, ABLE MARS and RENA'S WUNDERBAR bumped due to both horses shifting ground. About 50 Metres from the winning post, L'ENFANT was steadied when crowded for room between WATCHMAN which shifted out and ABLE MARS which shifted in. In the circumstances, no action was taken. Shortly after this, WATCHMAN and ABLE MARS bumped due to both horses shifting ground. Over the concluding stages, RENA'S WUNDERBAR was inclined to lay in. Throughout the race, QUEEN'S GLORY raced wide and without cover. When questioned, D Whyte (NAOMERIC TE SPECSO) said he had been instructed to ride the horse with cover, give it a chance to settle and ensure it finished the race off. He said when previously ridden in more forward positions, NAOMERIC TE SPECSO had failed to close off as the trainer had anticipated. He said today NAOMERIC TE SPECSO, which had drawn the second widest barrier, began best, he immediately restrained the horse in the hope of being able to shift in to find cover. He said he felt had he gone forward in an attempt to obtain cover behind PREMIER BURG, QUEENS' GLORY which had drawn to his inside would have continued to improve with him and hold him wide without cover, so he elected to steady further and shift initially behind QUEEN'S GLORY and then further behind ABLE MARS and RENA'S WUNDERBAR, both of which in his opinion were his main dangers in the race. He said despite being behind midfield at the 800 Metres he was satisfied with his position and he felt he had carried out the trainer's intentions by having the horse settled with cover. He added however in the Straight NAOMERIC TE SPECSO again failed to finish the race off as anticipated. The explanations submitted by D Whyte were recorded. NAOMERIC TE SPECSO was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of NAOMERIC TE SPECSO after the race did not show any significant findings. WATCHMAN and ABLE MARS were sent for sampling.
