Racing Incident Report

BRILLIANT PALACE had its left hind plate refitted in the saddling stalls prior to the race. On jumping, L'ENFANT was steadied and lost its running when crowded for room between TIM'S TONIC and ETERNAL FUN which got its head on the side and shifted in. PERFECT GALLANT and LUCKY BIRD were slow to begin. SUPER BEST began awkwardly and bumped the inside gate of its stall. ACME OF SURPRISE began awkwardly. In the early stages, EL VIENTO proved difficult to settle and on a number of occasions got its head up. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, SUPER BEST got its head on the side, hung in and caused crowding on its inside to BEEP BEEP. PRETTY DOUBLE and ACME OF SURPRISE, which were following, bumped as a result of PRETTY DOUBLE being steadied away from the heels of BEEP BEEP. At the 600 Metres, EL VIENTO was bumped by ACME OF SURPRISE which was endeavouring to shift to the outside of SUPER BEST. After the 400 Metres, TIM'S TONIC was steadied when disappointed for running between PERFECT GALLANT and GOOD BOY, both of which shifted ground. For a considerable distance after the 400 Metres, PRETTY DOUBLE had difficulty obtaining clear running between BEEP BEEP and SUPER BEST which was giving ground, then at the 200 Metres obtained a run, however, near the 100 Metres again had difficulty obtaining clear running between BEEP BEEP and ACME OF SURPRISE. At the 300 Metres, ACME OF SURPRISE, which had some difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied and shifted to the inside of L'ENFANT which was giving ground. Over the concluding stages, SUNNY DESERT hung out. Throughout the race, L'ENFANT, which was to be ridden forward today, raced outside the lead but three wide without cover. F Coetzee (SUPER BEST) explained after beginning awkwardly the horse obtained a nice position behind the leaders and travelled fairly until just prior to straightening. He said in the Straight when placed under pressure SUPER BEST did not respond to his riding and gave ground. F Coetzee was unable to offer any explanation for the performance of SUPER BEST. SUPER BEST was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. A veterinary examination of SUPER BEST after the race did not show any significant findings. Before being permitted to race again, SUPER BEST will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. BRILLIANT PALACE was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. After the race, BRILLIANT PALACE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was making an abnormal breathing noise and an endoscopic examination showed it to be a "roarer" and also to have a significant amount of blood present in the trachea. The performance of BRILLIANT PALACE was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, BRILLIANT PALACE will have to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SUNNY DESERT and GOOD BOY were sent for sampling.
