Racing Incident Report

DENDRANTHEMA LOVE was slow to begin, then shortly afterwards was steadied away from the heels of AMO which shifted in after being brushed by NOBLE SILENCE. In the early stages, HOROSCOPE was caught wide mainly due to the pace and because of this after the 1000 Metres was allowed to stride forward to shift in to a three wide position. Approaching the 200 Metres, NILOMETER was held up and unable to improve when racing behind SAINT THOMAS. W Woods (NORTHERNER) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 100 Metres he shifted his mount out when not clear of MARANELLO, causing that horse to lose its rightful running and be checked. In the circumstances of this case, it was considered the appropriate penalty was for W Woods' licence to ride in races be suspended for a period to expire on Thursday 20 May 2004 on which day he may resume race riding (5 Hong Kong racedays). As W Woods is a retained rider, the Stewards acceded to a request from him that the suspension takes immediate effect. Over the concluding stages, SAINT THOMAS was awkwardly placed close to the heels of NOBLE SILENCE and because of this was not ridden out to the line as it normally would be. G Schofield (MIRACLES) said it was thought there would not be a great deal of speed in the race, he was therefore instructed to have the horse more prominent than is unusual. He said in accordance with those instructions he allowed MIRACLES to go forward in the early stages, however, it did not have sufficient speed to clear runners to its inside, therefore was obliged to race wide and without cover. When further questioned regarding the middle stages of the race, G Schofield said before the 600 Metres he had looked to his inside in the hope of being able to shift across to race beside HOROSCOPE, however, he was not properly clear of MARANELLO and he felt he would have caused interference to that horse if he had shifted at that time. He said because he had already made some use of MIRACLES in the early stages, he was reluctant to again press forward to ensure he was well clear of MARANELLO which seemed intent on holding its position on his inside. He said in the Straight MIRACLES did not respond to his riding and gave ground and was not suited by the manner the way today's race was run. MIRACLES was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of MIRACLES after the race did not show any significant findings. SAINT THOMAS, NOBLE SILENCE and NORTHERNER were sent for sampling. After the race, it was reported HOROSCOPE had lost its left front plate.
