Racing Incident Report
SWEET SMILE began awkwardly, bounded in the air and lost ground. AURELIAN and SPEEDY EXPRESS were slow to begin. Shortly after the start, FREEBIRD was steadied when crowded for room between SHINING DAY which got its head on the side and shifted out slightly and JUSTINIAN which shifted in slightly. SWEET SMILE made the turn after the 1200 Metres awkwardly. After the 1000 Metres, HAPPY KID got its head on the side, hung in and caused crowding to AURELIAN. Near the 700 Metres, CHING HOI BOY was bumped by SPEEDY EXPRESS. After this, CHING HOI BOY shifted in and caused crowding on its inside to SWEET SMILE. After the 100 Metres, KING OF SPADES, which was closing the race off fairly, was steadied and shifted in away from the heels of FREEBIRD. For the major part of the race, FREEBIRD hung out. G Mossé (COULDN'T CARE LESS) said from a gate towards the outside he was today instructed to ride the horse along in the early stages and endeavour to obtain a position with cover behind the leaders. He said COULDN'T CARE LESS began awkwardly, causing him to momentarily lose the use of his left stirrup. He said he then rode along in an endeavour to clear runners on his inside and hopefully be able to obtain some cover. He said he was not able to do so when HAPPY KID held its position towards his inside and as a result he raced three wide and without cover throughout. He said the horse in the Straight then gave ground. G Mossé did point out prior to today's race COULDN'T CARE LESS seemed more excited than usual. Mr C S Shum, trainer of COULDN'T CARE LESS, said the intention with the horse today had been the same as at the horse's previous start in that he wanted the horse to be ridden with cover. He said because of the horse's wide barrier and the make-up of the field today he believed the best opportunity of being able to obtain cover was to go forward in the early stages providing the horse began well. The explanations submitted by G Mossé and Mr Shum were reported. M Rodd (CHARIOT OF WEI HAI) said from the outside barrier the intention had been to drop the horse in. He said he therefore steadied his mount shortly after jumping, allowed other runners to go forward and commenced to shift across behind them. He said when he did this CHARIOT OF WEI HAI resented the kickback and lost additional ground, then entering the Back Straight CHARIOT OF WEI HAI began to over-race and was travelling close to the heels of DEVON FLAIR. He said because of this he shifted CHARIOT OF WEI HAI to the outside, as a consequence it raced wide and without cover for the remainder of the race and gave ground in the Straight. S Dye (DRAGON STRIDE) said the intention had been to ride the horse somewhere around 4th or 5th position. He said it was anticipated a number of horses drawn to his inside would show superior early speed and he should endeavour to obtain a position with cover behind them. He said DRAGON STRIDE began only fairly and X-SPEED which had drawn to his inside immediately showed superior pace, he anticipated that horse would continue on into a forward position and he believed to have ridden in an endeavour to cross X-SPEED would have been detrimental to the chances of DRAGON STRIDE, he therefore came back and dropped in. He said after doing this near the 1400 Metres he rode along in an endeavour to clear KING OF SPADES and shift across to race one off the fence outside SWEET SMILE, however, KING OF SPADES maintained a position one off the fence. He said shortly after this he steadied when awkwardly placed on the outside of KING OF SPADES and inside the heels of CHING HOI BOY and as a consequence he ended up racing with the rear. He said along the Back Straight he was following CHING HOI BOY which had SPEEDY EXPRESS racing to its outside, a horse which he considered would give ground as it was doubtful of running out the distance of today's race. He said after the 600 Metres when he was able to edge SPEEDY EXPRESS out which was giving ground, he commenced to ride along to improve his position, however, DRAGON STRIDE failed to respond to his riding and was most disappointing. Mr P O'Sullivan, trainer of DRAGON STRIDE, confirmed the riding instructions to S Dye and said in his opinion the horse did not begin well enough for the instructions to be able to be carried out. He said he was most disappointed with the performance of DRAGON STRIDE considering the run the horse had had he would have expected it to close the race off which it failed to do. DRAGON STRIDE was sent for an official veterinary inspection and sampling. After the race, DRAGON STRIDE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucopus in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, DRAGON STRIDE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SPEEDY EXPRESS and CHARIOT OF WEI HAI were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of SPEEDY EXPRESS and CHARIOT OF WEI HAI after the race did not show any significant findings. SHINING DAY and HAPPY KID were sent for sampling.
