Racing Incident Report
SEVENS HEAVEN began awkwardly, bounded in the air and lost ground. After the 1000 Metres, FLASH HARRY, which was racing ungenerously, got its head up when being steadied while racing in restricted room between SEVENS HEAVEN and SMART CHAMPION. Near the 300 Metres, FAST TRACK, which was commencing to close the race off strongly, was checked and shifted out away from the heels of LASER GLORY which was giving ground. Throughout the race, GIFTED RUNNER raced wide and without cover. The Stewards overruled a protest/objection lodged by S Dye, the rider of QI'S PET, 3rd placegetter, against TOP SCORER (R Fradd) being declared the 2nd placegetter for alleged interference to his mount over the final 100 Metres. The Stewards considered whilst TOP SCORER inside the final 50 Metres shifted in and bumped QI'S PET which as a result became unbalanced, they did not consider bearing in mind the head margin between the two horses at the finish of the race that QI'S PET would have finished in front of TOP SCORER had the interference which did take place not occurred. Accordingly the Judge's placings as semaphored were confirmed. The Stewards were satisfied R Fradd stopped riding and straightened TOP SCORER, therefore no action was taken, however, he was reminded to do his utmost to prevent a similar occurrence. Apprentice C W Wong (UNIVERSAL PIONEER) said as usual he had been instructed to lead on the horse and he was then to attempt to run the race at his own speed. He said from a wide barrier UNIVERSAL PIONEER began well, he had to ride along to clear runners to his inside and was eventually able to cross to the fence at the 800 Metres. He said when he was riding along to clear runners on his inside, he had to make a little more use of UNIVERSAL PIONEER than he would have wished, however, after reaching the fence UNIVERSAL PIONEER would not then relax for him and continued to run at a fast tempo. He said he endeavoured to have UNIVERSAL PIONEER gradually settle for him, however, it refused to do so and in his opinion to have restrained UNIVERSAL PIONEER significantly at this time would have caused the horse to get its head up and possibly run at an even faster tempo. Apprentice Wong was told his explanation would be accepted, however, he must at all times be mindful of the tempo which races are being run. When questioned, G Schofield (SMART CHAMPION) said near the 700 Metres he was travelling behind TOP SCORER but back off that horse and between WINNING BULLET on the inside and SMARTY on the outside. He said at this time SMART CHAMPION when making the turn got its head on the side and shifted out towards the heels of SMARTY which made it difficult for him to maintain his position. He said when SMART CHAMPION was awkward close to the heels of SMARTY, WINNING BULLET shifted out from the inside which caused him further inconvenience after the 500 Metres. He said the manner in which SMART CHAMPION was racing put him in a situation whereby he was unable to maintain his position on the back of TOP SCORER. WINNING BULLET and TOP SCORER were sent for sampling.
