Racing Incident Report
WEALTHY TREASURE was withdrawn on 23.3.06 by order of the Stewards acting on veterinary advice (lame left hind foot) and was replaced by Standby Declared Starter GOODY. Before being allowed to race again, WEALTHY TREASURE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SANBENITO was slow to begin. SING FAY FAY, which was endeavoured to be taken back at the start, proved very difficult to settle in the early stages. ABLE ONE began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped the hindquarters of FLORAL PEGASUS. ENGINEERING WONDER began awkwardly, got its head up, shifted out and bumped LUCKY CHAMPION. After the 1300 Metres, SING FAY FAY was steadied when crowded for room inside SUPER WONGCHOY. After the 1000 Metres, SANBENITO was steadied away from the heels of ENGINEERING WONDER which itself was proving difficult to settle and was close to the heels of LUCKY CHAMPION. In the Straight, ABLE ONE hung in, near the 100 Metres was carried in further by FIRST AMONG EQUALS which shifted ground. As a result of this, ABLE ONE was momentarily steadied away from the heels of GOLD STRIKER. Also in the Straight, SING FAY FAY hung in. Over the concluding stages, NOBLE SILENCE hung in. F Coetzee (FLORAL PEGASUS) said he had been instructed to lead on the horse as is usual. He said FLORAL PEGASUS began only fairly, he then rode along and was able to quickly obtain a half length advantage over SIR ERNESTO which he anticipated would allow him to cross. He said he continued to race in advance of SIR ERNESTO until after the 1000 Metres when that horse again pulled its way forward on his inside. He said after making the turn at the 800 Metres he became aware the pace at which the first 600 Metres had been run would make it difficult for FLORAL PEGASUS to finish the race off, he then steadied his mount which after the 700 Metres became unbalanced in its action. He said because of the manner in which the race was run in the early stages FLORAL PEGASUS failed to close the race off. F Coetzee was told his explanation would be recorded. G Schofield (SIR ERNESTO), which was having its first start in blinkers, said the intention had been to lead if possible. He said because of this he allowed SIR ERNESTO to travel forward after beginning well and did not ride the horse vigorously to do so. He said shortly after the start when FLORAL PEGASUS crossed to race a half length in front of him on his outside, SIR ERNESTO immediately began to over-race. He said SIR ERNESTO continued to over-race and passing the 1000 Metres when FLORAL PEGASUS was ridden to go forward, SIR ERNESTO continued forward with that horse due to the manner in which it was racing. He said after the 700 Metres when FLORAL PEGASUS came back, SIR ERNESTO travelled more kindly, however, the speed the horse ran in the early stages due to its over-racing meant that it was unable to finish the race off. FLORAL PEGASUS and SIR ERNESTO were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of FLORAL PEGASUS and SIR ERNESTO after the race did not show any significant findings. ABLE ONE, FIRST AMONG EQUALS and GOLD STRIKER were sent for sampling.
