Racing Incident Report
QI'S PET, which was standing with its head turned to the left, was slow to begin. Approaching the winning post on the first occasion, KEY WINNER, which had been hard ridden to make up ground, was checked to avoid the heels of OCTABILITY (Apprentice K T Yeung) which shifted in when not properly clear. In the circumstances, Apprentice Yeung was severely reprimanded and told to exercise greater care. Passing the winning post on the first occasion, UNDERDOG (K S Yu) was checked when awkwardly placed close to the heels of VINCERE. K S Yu reported when he checked his mount at this time, his saddle shifted forward, placing him at a disadvantage. The performance of UNDERDOG, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, UNDERDOG will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. At the 1300 Metres, UNDERDOG got its head on the side, shifted out and was steadied away from the heels of MULLAAD. Making the turn at the 1000 Metres, MULLAAD became unbalanced and lost ground. After the 600 Metres, QI'S PET was checked to avoid the heels of KEY WINNER which was steadied and lost ground when awkwardly placed behind OCTABILITY which at this time commenced to give ground. Making the Home Turn, QI'S PET and SUPER GOAL MASTER raced tight when improving into a run between OCTABILITY and TRIUMPH, both of which were giving ground. After the 50 Metres, CASH IN was checked and shifted out to avoid the heels of ALWAYS ZIETEN which was giving ground. Because of this, CASH IN was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. The performance of OCTABILITY was considered unacceptable. Before being permitted to race again, OCTABILITY will have to perform competitively in an official barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned, Apprentice C W Wong (TRIUMPH) explained after passing the winning post on the first occasion he was racing in a three wide position on the outside of SPOKESMAN and at that time he had CASH IN racing to his outside. He said he felt SPOKESMAN would hold its position on the outside of OCTABILITY and behind SUDDEN SPLENDOR and therefore he did not ride his mount along but rather allowed CASH IN to go forward as he believed that horse would then travel in a three wide position and provide him with cover. He said near the 1200 Metres the leaders went forward which enabled CASH IN to shift across to race outside OCTABILITY and as a consequence TRIUMPH was then obliged to maintain its position three wide and without cover on the outside of SPOKESMAN. UNDERDOG was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of UNDERDOG after the race did not show any significant findings. KEY WINNER and SUDDEN SPLENDOR were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported OCTABILITY had lost its left hind plate.
