Racing Incident Report

KIMBERLEY was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, GALLANT HUSSAR lost its position when crowded for room between VIENTO and WHATAFANTASY (O Doleuze) which when being ridden along to go forward shifted in after being bumped by SIMPLY JOY which was being steadied and taken back from its wide barrier. In the circumstances, the Stewards believed it appropriate to reprimand O Doleuze and advise him in similar circumstances he would be expected to make a greater effort to protect his fellow riders. In the early stages, DIDI hung in. At the 800 Metres, TOUCH LUCKY, which was racing keenly, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of DIDI. For the major part of the race, EASTERN FIREBALL travelled wide and without cover and making the Home Turn was carried wider by LONGWAH RISING which shifted out. For some distance approaching and passing the 300 Metres, TOUCH LUCKY had difficulty obtaining clear running. Over the concluding stages, TOUCH LUCKY shifted out away from LONGWAH RISING which shifted ground while hanging. Also over the concluding stages, KIMBERLEY hung in. F Coetzee (CHIEF WITNESS) explained the intention had been to ride the horse in 3rd or 4th position if possible. He said CHIEF WITNESS had been difficult to settle in its races and as a consequence had been somewhat disappointing in the manner in which it had been closing off. He said today he allowed CHIEF WITNESS to begin and did not ride the horse along in the early stages to ensure that it did not over-race. He said CHIEF WITNESS travelled comfortably in front of midfield, however, near the 600 Metres when the tempo of the race steadied, he checked away from the heels of LONGWAH RISING. He said in the Home Straight CHIEF WITNESS finished the race off nicely, however, he was not able to ride his mount out over the concluding stages as he was awkwardly placed close to the heels of TOUCH LUCKY which shifted out. DIDI was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of DIDI after the race did not show any significant findings. LONGWAH RISING and TOUCH LUCKY were sent for sampling. After the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that WHATAFANTASY had lost its right hind plate.
