Racing Incident Report
The Stewards deferred the declaration of Weighed-In. They were of the prima facie view that an incident had occurred at the start which cast doubt on whether NORTHERN GOLD BALL had had an unfair start. After viewing the available video films and taking evidence from Mr P Waldron, Starter, the Stewards deemed that NORTHERN GOLD BALL had had an unfair start and accordingly declared the horse to be a non-starter [Rule 28(ix)]. It was established that after being boxed NORTHERN GOLD BALL became fractious and lunged forward with its head turned to the near side. NORTHERN GOLD BALL had its muzzle partially through the outside gate of its barrier as they opened and had its head turned to the near side in a position which made it impossible for the horse to jump. As it attempted to jump, D Whyte was dislodged. In view of the on-going problems caused to the start by NORTHERN GOLD BALL, the Race Meeting Stewards intend to give consideration to making a recommendation to the Stewards of the Jockey Club that the entries of NORTHERN GOLD BALL be refused. Whilst consideration is given to this matter, the entries of NORTHERN GOLD BALL will be refused. KEEN WINNER was slowly away. FORTUNE WIN jumped somewhat awkwardly. Just after the 200 Metres, SHAXI FORTUNE was steadied when momentarily tight between THANK HEAVENS and MAGIC HANDS which shifted out slightly. When questioned, S Dye (SMARTLORD) said before the race he was concerned with the action of the horse as he did not think it was stretching as it should in the preliminary. He went on to say the horse before its last run felt similar, then did work through its problems in the race and ran well. He anticipated the same situation would apply today. However, on leaving the gates SMARTLORD did not stretch out and at no stage of the race travelled as he thought it should. He said in the Straight he rode SMARTLORD along hands and heels but at no stage pulled the whip as he felt to have let the horse's head go and ridden with the whip could have caused problems for himself and other runners. Before being allowed to race again, SMARTLORD will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. THANK HEAVENS was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing.
