Racing Incident Report
After arriving at the barriers, A Marcus (WINNING BOY) reported to the Veterinary Surgeon that the horse in his opinion had not worked satisfactorily to the Start. WINNING BOY was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who could find no abnormalities and said in his opinion the horse was suitable to race. After being boxed, KINDRED SPIRITS became fractious and momentarily got down. The horse was released from the gates, examined by the Veterinary Surgeon who could find no abnormalities and reported in his opinion KINDRED SPIRITS was suitable to race. KINDRED SPIRITS missed the start. On jumping, KEEN WINNER was checked when crowded between SUN SHINE RIVER and COMMANDER CHARLIE which left the gates awkwardly with its head up and shifted out abruptly. The occurrence in the opinion of the Stewards was accidental. R Fradd (KEEN WINNER) said near the 600 Metres the horse started to give ground and over the concluding stages as he was concerned with the way KEEN WINNER was travelling, he did not ride it out. The performance of KEEN WINNER was considered to be unacceptable. Before KEEN WINNER can race again, the horse will be required to perform satisfactorily in an official barrier trial and will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. When questioned, F Naude (TRADER JOE) said the Trainer had instructed him with the light weight and the outside draw he should ride along in the early stages, endeavour to find the lead, then in the middle stages try and allow TRADER JOE some rest and then go forward again strongly from the turn. He said he was able to ride in accordance with the instructions given him, but did have to make a little more use of TRADER JOE in the early stages to go forward and get in than he would have wished. It was considered the explanations tendered by F Naude should be accepted. STRONG SCOTCH was sent for clinical veterinary examination and routine testing. After the race, J Egan (BEST LIGHT) reported to the Veterinary Surgeon that he thought the horse was lame. BEST LIGHT was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon, had the horse trotted up and was unable to find any abnormalities.
