Racing Incident Report
CAPITAL GAIN began awkwardly and lost ground at the start. CAPITAL GAIN then proved very difficult to settle in the early and middle stages. OWNERS' JOY was slow to begin. From a barrier towards the outside, VIPER CORP was immediately steadied at the start and shifted across behind the runners close to the rail. Also from a gate towards the outside, SURE FIT was obliged to race wide and without cover throughout the race. At the 1200 Metres, SUPER WONGCHOY was momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of COMMON PLACE which when shifting in was barely clear. When SUPER WONGCHOY steadied, crowding was caused on its inside to FIGHTING MASCOT and GUSCOTT. Running towards the 800 Metres, HIGHLIGHT, which was proving difficult to settle, lost its position when crowded between OWNERS' JOY and MEDIT KING which itself was racing tight on the inside of KALIMANTAN. For some distance after straightening, CAPITAL GAIN was held up when unable to obtain clear running. At the 300 Metres, SUPER WONGCHOY was checked when disappointed for running between SURE FIT which shifted in slightly and COMMON PLACE which when giving ground was taken out by OWNERS' JOY which improved on its inside. SUPER WONGCHOY was sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of SUPER WONGCHOY did not reveal any abnormality. W C Marwing (KALIMANTAN) said the intention had been to ride the horse with cover as he was aware when previously ridden in the lead the horse had failed to finish its race off. He said KALIMANTAN began well from a barrier towards the outside, he immediately followed SURE FIT across and at about the 1400 Metres endeavoured to steady his mount in the hope of finding cover behind that horse. He said he was not able to do so as MEDIT KING held a firm position behind SURE FIT and consequently he was obliged to race four wide without cover. He was adamant even bearing in mind the moderate early speed of the race, had he pressed forward on KALIMANTAN, it would have been detrimental to the horse's chances. The explanations submitted were accepted. KALIMANTAN, OWNERS' JOY and FIGHTING MASCOT were sent for sampling. After the race, it was noted that SURE FIT was making an abnormal breathing noise. The horse has previously been reported as in the early stages of being a "roarer".
