Racing Incident Report

WISDOM EXPRESS was a little slow to begin and shortly afterwards was checked to avoid the heels of SPEEDING MOLLY which shifted in after being bumped by UNIVERSAL PIONEER which was taken in slightly by GIFTED RUNNER which had its head on the side and shifted ground. FANTASTIC SHADOW was slow to begin. From the outside barrier, throughout the race GIFTED RUNNER raced wide and without cover. Making the turn after the 600 Metres, FANTASTIC SHADOW was awkwardly placed close to the heels of WELL BEST and tight inside SOUTH CHINA NINETY which had its head on the side and shifted in away from the heels of GIFTED RUNNER. In the Straight, the saddle on JOYFUL MASTER shifted back. W Smith (GOLDEN STRIDE) said the intention had been to ride the horse in 4th or 5th position, however, after beginning well shortly after the start he was unable to hold his position between CHATER JADE which shifted in slightly and STAR WARRIOR which had its head on the side and shifted out away from SING AND DRINK which itself shifted out. He said because of this GOLDEN STRIDE got much further back than intended. He said he remained racing in a rearward position until after straightening, then immediately placed his mount under pressure in an endeavour to improve into a run between FANTASTIC SHADOW and SOUTH CHINA NINETY. He said approaching the 100 Metres he considered shifting to the inside of UNIVERSAL PIONEER which was giving ground to continue going forward, however, he realised he was not clear of FANTASTIC SHADOW and to have done so would have caused that horse to lose its running and check. He said therefore he had no option other than to remain behind UNIVERSAL PIONEER and SOUTH CHINA NINETY and go to the post without testing his mount. The explanations submitted by W Smith were accepted. A Delpech (UNIVERSAL PIONEER) said he had been instructed by Trainer J Moore to ride the horse along in the early stages and go forward in an endeavour to shift in from his wide draw to a position close to the rail even if this meant leading. He said in accordance with these instructions he rode UNIVERSAL PIONEER along vigorously in the early stages, crossed runners to his inside and led on the fence, however, UNIVERSAL PIONEER gave ground in the Straight. GIFTED RUNNER, JOYFUL MASTER and WELL BEST were sent for sampling.
