Racing Incident Report

GOT IT RIGHT was withdrawn on raceday morning on veterinary grounds (skin rash). Before being allowed to race again, GOT IT RIGHT will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TUSITALA stood flat-footed at the start and lost a considerable amount of ground. When the gates opened, FABULOUS sat back. Because of this, Apprentice M W Leung, its rider, momentarily reached out with his right arm to take hold of a barrier partition to balance himself. As a consequence of this, FABULOUS lost a significant amount of ground at the start. LIGHT FOOT began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall. DIVINE FEELING began awkwardly and bumped the outside gate of its stall. After the 200 Metres, DIVINE FEELING was steadied to avoid the heels of LIGHT FOOT (Apprentice P H Lo) which for some distance had been awkwardly placed close to the heels of CHINA CAT and at this time shifted to the inside of that horse into clear running. Apprentice P H Lo was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances. S Dye (THISTLEJADE) said the horse raced in a forward position at its most recent start as a consequence of beginning well. He said THISTLEJADE had shown itself on numerous occasions to be a bad beginner and consequently usually raced back in the field. However, on two occasions prior to today's race THISTLEJADE had begun well and the horse had travelled further forward than is usual. He said today THISTLEJADE again began well from a barrier towards the middle, he initially rode along in the hope of being able to clear some runners to his inside and obtain a favourable position. He said approaching the first turn he was travelling four wide outside BIEN BIEN HEART, he therefore elected to again ride THISTLEJADE along and go forward and cross to the lead on the fence. He said after doing this THISTLEJADE was allowed to lead unchallenged which meant he was able to run the race at a tempo to which he was suited. He did say because THISTLEJADE is an unreliable beginner, the manner in which it begins its races always determines where it travels in running. Whilst the Stewards accepted S Dye's explanation of THISTLEJADE leading today, he was told where possible it is important to have horses ridden in a consistent manner. TUSITALA was sent for a clinical veterinary examination and sampling. After the race, TUSITALA was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a significant amount of mucus in the horse's trachea. Before being permitted to race again, TUSITALA will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. FABULOUS and BIEN BIEN HEART were sent for a clinical veterinary examination. A veterinary examination of FABULOUS and BIEN BIEN HEART after the race did not show any significant findings. THISTLEJADE and NATURAL ECHO were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 1 March 2004)
The Senior Veterinary Officer reported that following a further examination of VENETIAN MASTER this morning, the horse was found to have a severe corneal ulcer of the left eye. Before being allowed to race again, VENETIAN MASTER will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
