Racing Incident Report
WE'RE BUDDIES was slow to begin. Shortly after the start, MONEY EXPRESS and PERFECT GALLANT bumped. At the 1600 Metres, PERFECT GALLANT was steadied away from the heels of CUPID. Near the 1000 Metres, after being carried wide by PERFECT GALLANT, HARVEST GALA was steadied away from the heels of NEW CENTURY. Making the turn at the 600 Metres, CUPID was awkwardly placed close to the heels of TWEET when racing tight inside MONEY EXPRESS. Shortly after this, MONEY EXPRESS was steadied when CUPID shifted to the outside of TWEET. After the 200 Metres, E Saint-Martin (WE'RE BUDDIES) dropped his whip. In the Straight, LAZY BUDDIES was inclined to hang in. Near the winning post, LA MERVEILLE, which was giving ground, was steadied when awkwardly placed between CUPID and WE'RE BUDDIES. Because of this, LA MERVEILLE was not ridden out to the end of the race as it normally would be. Throughout the race, NEW CENTURY raced wide and without cover. F Coetzee (HARVEST GALA) said as the horse had drawn wide tonight and was racing with the blinkers removed he had been instructed if possible to try and find the fence but somewhere around midfield. He said if the horse began cleanly his intention was to roll forward with the hope of being able to obtain a desired position, however, HARVEST GALA did not begin as well as he hoped and he therefore allowed the horse to drop in to avoid being caught wide having in mind his instructions. He said approaching the winning post on the first occasion HARVEST GALA was reluctant to stride out and he rode along at that time in an endeavour to have the horse travelling into the bit, however, it got back to be racing in a rearward position. When questioned, O Doleuze (BAUHINIA) said prior to the race he had been advised the horse when racing wide had a tendency to hang out. He said he was therefore instructed primarily to do his utmost to find the rail and if the horse began well he should try and lead, however, if another horse was ridden to lead he should sit off that horse. Mr S Woods, trainer of BAUHINIA, confirmed the riding instructions issued to O Doleuze. He said he had been disappointed with the way the horse had been racing recently. He said at the horse's only other start over 1800 Metres at Sha Tin it had been ridden in a forward position and hung out badly before giving ground in the Straight on a rain affected track. He said O Doleuze was told tonight to make every endeavour to find the rail and then to have the horse relaxed which he was able to do and as a consequence the performance of BAUHINIA which won tonight was better than its other race performances. Mr Woods was told the changes in the intentions to the manner in which horses trained by him are to be ridden which bring about turnarounds in performances may be considered to place him in breach of the Rule dealing with inconsistent running and such changes could in the future leave him open to be penalised. BAUHINIA and ONE EYE JACK were sent for sampling.
