Racing Incident Report

DONGGUAN VICTORY was slow to begin. In the early stages, STEP FORWARD raced tight inside HAPPY CONTENDER which had its head on the side and was hanging in. After the 1200 Metres, HAPPY CONTENDER momentarily drifted out. This allowed STEP FORWARD which was racing to its inside to shift away from the rail. As a consequence, HAPPY CONTENDER raced three wide and without cover. W M Lai (TREASURE FIELD) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding [Rule 100(1)] in that near the 600 Metres he shifted his mount out when not clear of STEP FORWARD, causing that horse to be crowded for room and lose its rightful running. W M Lai was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Thursday 16 June 2005 on which day he may resume race riding (2 Hong Kong racedays). The commencement of the suspension was deferred until after the Happy Valley racemeeting next Wednesday 8 June 2005. In addition, W M Lai was fined $20,000 in lieu of a suspension for a period incorporating two further racedays. Over the concluding stages, OUT OF MY WAY hung in. For the major part of the race, WINNING RONGRONG hung out and proved difficult to ride. When questioned regarding the poor performance of LEGIONNAIRE, Y T Cheng was unable to offer any explanation. He said LEGIONNAIRE raced in a forward position as instructed, however, at the 600 Metres commenced to give ground. He did point out it was the first occasion that LEGIONNAIRE had run over 2400 Metres of today's race. Mr C H Yip, trainer of LEGIONNAIRE, said prior to the race he believed the horse would have a good chance, however, on reflection being a three year old he did not think LEGIONNAIRE was able to stay the distance of today's race. Mr Yip said LEGIONNAIRE will now be spelled. LEGIONNAIRE was sent for an official veterinary inspection. After the race, LEGIONNAIRE was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said the horse was blowing heavily and mildly distressed. Before being allowed to race again, LEGIONNAIRE will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. SYLLABUS and LAZY BUDDIES were sent for sampling.
Additional Veterinary Reports (released on 7 June 2005)
DONGGUAN VICTORY was examined by the Veterinary Surgeon at the stables of Trainer D A Hayes yesterday morning. He said at this time he noted the horse was lame in the right front leg. Before being allowed to race again, DONGGUAN VICTORY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
