Racing Incident Report

ISLAND SPIRIT was slow to begin, then lost further ground when crowded for room between STILTON and BAJAN BELL which on jumping shifted in abruptly. Shortly after this, DOUBLE FANTASY and STILTON became unbalanced when bumped by BAJAN BELL which shifted further. In this incident, STILTON lost ground. After the 1200 Metres, when being steadied to obtain a position with cover, TOP TOP LIGHT got its head up. For some distance after this, TOP TOP LIGHT proved difficult to settle. Prior to straightening, BAJAN BELL was steadied when awkwardly placed behind FIRST KNIGHT and inside the heels of STILTON. At the 400 Metres, STILTON was checked when disappointed for running between HEALTHY FRUITS and TOP TOP LIGHT. KAISER'S PRIZE, which was following, was checked to avoid the heels of STILTON. After the 300 Metres, FIRST KNIGHT was momentarily steadied when having difficulty obtaining clear running on the inside of SOUTH BREEZE. After the 200 Metres, ISLAND SPIRIT, which was closing the race off well, was steadied and shifted to the inside of DOUBLE FANTASY to continue going forward. For the major part of the race, HEALTHY FRUITS travelled wide and without cover. When questioned, Apprentice P H Lo (FIRST KNIGHT) said prior to the race he had been instructed to have the horse begin well if possible. He said it was anticipated that the horses drawn inside FIRST KNIGHT would not show early speed and therefore he should obtain a position in front of those runners if possible in what he expected to be a moderately run race. He said accordingly he ensured FIRST KNIGHT began well, went forward to clear runners on his inside and then allowed FIRST KNIGHT to obtain a position with cover behind the leaders. He said in the Straight FIRST KNIGHT finished the race off fairly. Mr S Woods, trainer of FIRST KNIGHT, confirmed the riding instructions issued to Apprentice Lo. He said he was concerned if he instructed Apprentice Lo to take FIRST KNIGHT back from the start, the horse would not be suited by the manner in which the race would be run. He also added in recent times horses ridden by Apprentice Lo had not been beginning well and therefore he believed it was in the circumstances appropriate to issue Apprentice Lo with instructions to have the horse begin well. Mr Woods was reminded of the obligations he has under the Rules to ensure horses trained by him race in a consistent manner. HAPPY KID and DOUBLE FANTASY were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of HAPPY KID after the race did not show any significant findings. After the race, DOUBLE FANTASY was examined by the Veterinary Officer. He said an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of blood in the horse's trachea. Before being allowed to race again, DOUBLE FANTASY will be subjected to an official veterinary examination. TOP TOP LIGHT, STILTON and SUPER SNIPPETS were sent for sampling.
